BF brestfeed
« on: March 25, 2006, 05:29:44 am »
we have weaned our DD to mostly bottle feeds. I like breastfeeding in the morning to maintain our bond; however, the rest of her feeds are done using a bottle, either formula or breastmilk, and sometimes a mix of the two. She really is not eating well when I breastfeed her, pulling off and latching back on. Typically, she will only feed for 15-20 mins (and that includes the time off the breast). My flow has dropped considerably since I am mostly feeding with bottles now. Is my flow just not enough? or is she just more interested in bottle feeding? If so, any suggestions on how I can get her to nurse better?

your supply is more than likely low b/c you are supplementing with formula.  supply = demand.  if you want to continue bfing i would suggest you pump after every feeding to help increase your supply and put lo on the breast quite often for a few days to stimulate the milk flow. lo is probably frusterated at the minimal amount of milk she is getting off the breast and that's why she seems to prefer formula/bottles.  if you get your supply back up to where it should be i am sure your lo will be just as interested in her bf's.

thanks, thats what I tought; however, she's quite active and likes being able to know whats going on around her at all times (sometimes she'll even sleep with her eyes open), so the two issues are confusing the situation. I will be trying your suggestions though. Again, thanks

Also, when you have a 'mixed feed' make sure you start with the breast to help keep your supply up.

if you are having trouble with your lo feeding due to nosiness ( i have one of those lo's too! :) ) i always have to go into a dark room IMMEDIATELY after she wakes up, if there is noise in the house i try to drown it out with humming.  no matter who is overand who wants to go get her up from her nap i can't let anyone or else she will just be too excited/stimulated and rush through her feed and only nurse until she feels satisfied - not til she is full. and it has helped to nurse consistantly in the same place...in my room where it is dark and quiet.  just thought i would throw a few pointers out there for a spirited one - hth.
