8 month old will not go sleep anymore without rocking
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:59:15 am »
Oh my god what a weekend we have had.

Our son is nearing 9 months and apart from not wanting solids or water! he has had a pretty good routine and would go off to sleep on his own no problem.

Before we went onto easy our lives were chaos we didnt know when sleep times were or feed times but soon mastered it and it all went great BUT NOT ANYMORE???

He has started crawling and standing and since then screams blue murder when we put him down for a nap, he hangs over the cot nose running, drool everywhere and just screams, hes like a new child thats just appeared from nowhere and I just cant cope?

THe PU/PD just doesnt work and i struggle with it anyway because I have a pelvic problem and spinal nerve damage since the birth so cannot bend. I have had help from the mother in law this week and this is when the problem began???

I cannot understand why hes so upset when he use to love his cot and his naps were pretty much right on time?

I don't know where to turn my mother and mother in law are very much 'old school' and think he should be rocked to sleep with a bottle but I just cant go back to that again, it takes up so much time.

Anything any advice please, I am so desperate and just not well enough to cope. He has also stopped eating but hated veg before anyway, and doesnt drink fluids apart from formula.

Can you post your routine and we'll see what we can find?

I agree - you don't want to start rocking to sleep or feeding to sleep - hard habits to break. We'll figure this out.

When dd was 8 months she went through a phase of suddenly going from being a really good sleeper at nap and bedtimes to waking a couple of times in the night, screaming at nap and bedtimes unless I stayed in the room with her until she fell asleep.  I think that it was due to separation anxiety which hits around this time.  The naps and night wakings didn't last too long (thank god) but going to bed at night took a couple of months to sort out but probably because I did always sit with her till asleep (sometimes took hour and half!) and she got used to it.  What I should have done is gradually move away sitting further away from the bed etc until outside the door.  I didn't talk or make eye contact but just would shuss if she started to make a fuss. Eventually one night I had to leave the room for some reason and she just went off on her own and from then on seemed so much better and things went back to normal!  Hang in there, it might take a while but try and be consistant with what you do.
