How to give spinach for a 12 month old?
« on: March 27, 2006, 20:59:02 pm »
I know spinach is super healthy for lo's but I am unsure how to give it to my DS.  I know the frozen chopped spinach is fairly mushy and maybe I could feed it to him that way as a finger food??  Any ideas?  Does anyone do fresh spinach?

Thanks!

My guys are 8 mo therefore I'm still pureeing spinach for them but how about this recipe I found...maybe you could just chop it all when it's finished cooking for a more toddler-appropriate texture?:

Pears and Spinach

    * 3/4 pound fresh spinach, thoroughly rinsed and stems/thick veins removed
    * 2 ripe pears

    * steam together for 6 minutes
    * yields 1 1/2 cups

i add spinach to cheese sauce and pour it over pasta.

I find that adding any veg to cheese sauce and over pasta is my way of getting extra veg into DS if I feel he hasn't had enough veg.

You could just steam the spinach and puree to the consistancy your bubs likes.
I just buy the frozen spinach and use that as it is already a good consistancy for my DD.

Thanks for all the suggestions, especially the pear and spinach combo.  That will be interesting to try!  I think I'll just try some frozen, chopped spinach (defrosted of course) and see how it goes.  I like the idea of mixing it with cheese sauce, too.

Does anyone do fresh spinach?  How old can you do that?

Hi Suzanne,

I do fresh spinach.  I've been doing it since just over 7 months.  My "Super Baby Food" book says to introduce at 9 months but I hadn't read that part yet when I decided to give it a go!  My DD LOVES spinach.   :o  Just a warning....when it comes out the other end, it looks EXACTLY like when it went in, LOL!!!  I actually took a photo of the dirty diaper and sent it to my husband at work to show him how delicious it looked!!!  Eeew, gross!!
