NOT EATING
« on: March 28, 2006, 14:34:38 pm »
Hi All

I'm trying my best to get my DS (he is 15 weeks) on a 4 hour routine. However when I feed him, lets say a 6oz bottle, when he stops at 3 oz to be burped, I struggle to get him to carry on eating the other 3oz, sometimes it takes an hour. So then I am left with the dilema of when to do his next feed as I'm trying to extend them????

Your help is much appreciated

Hi Wendy, welcome to the boards.

What size of teat are you using on the bottle?
What is your LO doing for the 2nd half? Is he maybe bored?

Sometimes DS take an hour to feed and I then feed him again when he should be - we currently do 4.5 EASY ::)

If you want to post your current routine, we can try and help further.

Hi, thanks for replying to me....

I am using a size 2 Dr Brown. The schedule I am using at the moment is a bit eratic as I'm trying to extend the feeds but because of the feeding problem it's proving a little hard. Also, I have just made a doctors appt for this afternoon as he is crying alot which is out of character for him.... He is a sample of a 3 day routine. It all started going wrong from yesterday....
Thanks for your help

Hi Wendy

How did you get on at the doctors? If you start to feed him little bits here and there throughout the day, he will turn into a snacker, has this been happening long? It may already have happened. The best thing to do is perserve at the 'designated' E time, DS can also take an hour sometimes. Is the teat fast enough, is he free from distractions when feeding, have you tried giving him a 5 - 10 rest after the initially 3oz?

You need to be choosing a wake up time and sticking to it i.e 7am. This means that your feeds will always happen at the same time everyday. it is excellent you got him back to sleep after the 6am wake up, anything before 7am should be treated as a n/feed, but you should wake him at 7am to start the day. I also notice your bedtimes are varied, this is making the wake up times varied.

I really, really feel that you should be waking up at a set time and getting him to bed for the same time everynight. Babies like to know whats coming next, and having the, on a routine that is roughly the same everyday - helps with this.

Let me know what you think.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I hear what your saying..We have been trying for a 8.30pm bedtime and a 8am wake-up, although he has been waking up earlier, hence the varied wake up times, I guess I was just hoping he would start waking up at 8am!!!

The doctor thought he may be starting with something as he was rejecting his food. It was only for 2 days that I noticed him not taking his food, so hopefully I haven't turned him into a snacker.....

He slept this morning until 5.30am from 8.30pm last night, he took 5oz at 5.30am so hopefully we will have a better day today. My question now is, when I wake him at 7am, it'only 1 1/2 hours since his last feed, surely this will throw him off for the rest of the day, as he won't be ready for his food? Should I be letting him sleep to 8am or wake him at 7am?

Your help is very much appreciated
Regards
Wendy

Hiya
I was using 7am as an example, you choice a wake up time and stick with it. It you find yourself int he situation where is has only been 1.5hr since last feed, then the 8am feed (if that when you start the day) will just be a top-up then as normal for your next E.

Thanks you have been so helpful........

I woke him up at 8am and fed him at 8.30am. He took 4oz. I then couldn't get him to stay up past 9.15am. Hopefully he'll sleeper longer than 45 mins. Just one more question for today.....If he wakes at 7am the next few mornings should I try and get hi to go back to sleep?
Thanks again

Yes, even if it takes 40min - wake him at 8am, he will adjust.

Hi, me again

Liam woke at 10.20am after only going down at 9.15am.....I can't get him to go back to sleep after the 45mins-1 hour nap and he is cranky again after only being up 15 minutes...When I go to get him out of bed he looks wide awake, smiles etc.....any suggestions. He was so cranky that I put him in his swing and he has gone back to sleep.....I don't really want to get in a habit of doing this. I try pick up put down but he just seems so awake.
Thanks againWendy

Hi Stacy

Sorry for just getting back to you, and thankyou for your help.....

For the past 3 days my LO has slept from 7.45pm-7.30am!!!!! I don't know what happened, it's weird, but I'm not complaining ;D

I have decided that 7am is going to be his wake-up time and 7.45pm his sleep time. Now I am trying wake to sleep. I put him down at 8.20am, what time would you suggest going in to wake him and how much does he have to come round e.g move head, open eyes?
Thanks again

Thanks Lauren, for your help earlier...

I don't know how it happened, but like I said, no complaints here  :)

While I'm here, My little one is still sleeping from his 8.20am nap.....What time should I wake him? Shall I do 1 1/2 hours or 2 hours. He's been eating every 3.5 hours
Thanks again

Thanks Stacy

He was awake form 6.50am-8.20am, so 1 1/2 hours......I went in to do the wake to sleep 25 mins into his nap (as I'd not received your e-mail at that point), is this OK?. He has now slept for just under 2 hours. So I will wake him at 2 hours and see how we do this afternoon. Just to clarify, how much should I wake him at wake to sleep?
Thanks

Hi Stacy & Lauren

I just wanted to let you know that Liam is doing great.....

He is still sleeping from 7.45pm-7am and I tried the wake to sleep method yesterday for all naps..........and it worked like a dream. I have also just done it for his nap this morning and again it worked..I'm totally amazed.

What do you think I should do tonight, with the daylight savings? keep him up or put him down at his regular time of 7.45 (which would only be 6.45pm) as he woke at 8am this morning?

Thanks for your help
Wendy

OK so I take back all my gloating from earlier today......

Liam, did not nap good today at all, the "wake to sleep" didn't work today for some reason.....He woke up on his own this morning at 8am (really 7am), so I don't know if this had something to do with it? SO he napped for 1 hour x 2 and then 1/2 hour. I'll try again tomorrow ??? I've put him down at his regular time of 7.45pm, so we'll see what happens tonight. Fingers crossed.

OK so I had a really lazy day today, my LO woke up at 5.10am, and we brought him into our bed, where he slept until 8am. I was so exhausted at 7am that I let him sleep until 8am!!!! I know I'm so bad, I will get him up at 7am tomorrow. Let's see if "Wake to Sleep" works today :-\
