Food allergy causing diaper rash?
« on: March 29, 2006, 01:10:20 am »
DS has a bad diaper rash!  I feel so bad for the little guy!  Before he started eating grown-up food, he never had any rashes.

I looked up diaper rashes on the internet and found that his particular type of rash is caused by a food allergy, so I've started avoiding giving him foods made with tomato sauce and any citrus (though I did give him some orange a few days ago but won't 'cheat' again). His rash tells me that something is still bothering him.  Any ideas?  Could it be strawberries? (I added a couple when I made his applesauce.)  Could it be eggs? (although he's been eating the yolks for months now, maybe the egg whites which I started just a couple of weeks ago?)

I don't want to completely stop giving him all "grown-up" food... I honestly don't think he would go back to eating/drinking only oatmeal and milk.

TIA!

My son never had any diaper rashes until we started giving him oranges, tomatoes, and strawberries. The foods were too acidic for him. We ended up having to limit these foods for a while. I, too, would check with your doctor to make sure.

The rash finally went away! Aquaphor really works, much better than A&D.

I will stop the strawberries, too - that's the only other thing that he's eaten lately that I can think of - and will call his doctor next week if it comes back. I don't give him any type of nut yet so I'm sure it's not that, and I no longer bf him so I know it's not something I've eaten lately. *phew*  :)

Thank you for your feedback!!   ;D

My dd can't have bananas or anything with banana in it in the slightest bit (even flavored toothpaste).  Her ped said it wasn't necessarily an allergy but an intolerance.  Either way, it makes for a terrible diaper rash.  Just don't give the suspected food for awhile and maybe try it again later under a controlled watch.  That's what we had to do to be sure.
