Burping/Gas at night
« on: March 29, 2006, 22:16:18 pm »
Hello!

My three month old seems to have a lot of gas over night, I think its from not getting all her burps out after feeding. I do burp her, though over the last couple weeks she has become a harder to burp overnight and there are times when I can spend an hour at night trying to get her to burp. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting burps out of a sleeping baby? I try many different positions, over the shoulder, sitting on my knee, patting and rubbing her back, gently bending her forward and back...

Also does anyone know how I can relieve her gas? I give her gripe water which can help sometimes.

Thanks for your help!

have u tried cutting anything out of your diet? could be making the situation worse...dairy, caffeine, gassy/spicy foods, citrus.  you may want to try cutting out 1 of these areas for a week or so and see if there is any difference, if not, try another.  i know it is hard but if it is something like that will be worth the effort and believe it or not you get used to it pretty quick...i can't have ANY caffeine myself!

have u tried bicycling legs or lots of tummy time??

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I have looked at my diet but  I don't eat anything the same each day during the late afternoon or evening that would make it into my milk overnight to bother her. I will take another look, thanks.

I have tried bicycling her legs, though at night I try not to wake her up. I will try some more tummy time before bed. She hates it but if it can help her get the gas out then its worth it!

Thanks again!

i used to put my lo on my lap for tummy time - she was more willing that way ;)

as far as your diet - 1day may not give enuff time for something to actually be out of your system - that is why i said to give it at least 1 week before trying something else.

bicycle before bed - could make it apart of your winddown routine for now!  i also would get a hot bowl of water and a cloth, get the cloth so it is warm enough (not hot) to put on lo's tummy n rub clockwise - keep doing and it should help get rid of lots of gas - this was apart of our routine too.

good luck!

Thanks for the additional information and suggestions!  I will give them a try!

I will review my diet again and see if any of the things you mentioned seem to bother her :)

Sincerely

you could also try giving her gripe water as standard before every feed - it's gentle enough that she shouldn't come to depend on it. my 5 month old was similar and we use a pharmacy mixture similar to gripe water but a little stronger and he's much easier to burp since then. it might be the age thing too but i find if he hasn't burped within a minute or so of his dream feed and he's starting to wake up a bit more, i can put him down anyway and he will go to sleep and the gas just comes out the other end eventually. if your lo is sleeping through her gas, i wouldn't worry about it too much - my plunket nurse said it doesn't matter which end it comes out of, just so long as it comes out  ;)

good luck!

I often give her gripe water before bed and during feeds depending on the night...thankfully she really likes it  ;)

I'm gald to know that if she doesn't burp its not a big deal...she does toot it out during the night. Usually doing that wakes her up because she's uncomfortable.

Thanks for your advice!

My lo hardly ever burps starting at his last feed before bed and continuing through his df and one night feed.  It all comes out the other end, starting with the df as soon as I pick him up but it doesn't even wake him up!  ::)  So, I agree, however it comes out, right!?

;D lol Stacy!  Brenden also inherited the farting gene from his daddy!  Up until a few weeks ago, we did the "pump and squeeze" - we would bicycle his legs for 10 seconds or so and then push his legs very firmly up against his tummy and let the noise begin!  Now in the past week or so he's become an independet farter though it is annoying when he wakes up in the middle of his sleep to bring his knees up to his chest and let some rip because sometimes they are so loud they wake him up!  ::)
