How much?
« on: March 30, 2006, 14:29:53 pm »
Madelaine is 6 3/4 mos. She has been eating solids since Mar 3rd. Bf-cereal, fruit, 60z formula (weaned Mar 3rd) Lunch-Cereal ~2-3 tbsp, fruit ~ 2tbsp, Veg ~ 2tbsp, 6 oz, and Dinner is the same. She will usually have a bottle in between for a snack. Very +++ active babe! Hangs out in saucer and rolls all over the floor. Days are not always the same, some days she is hungrier than others. Is this acceptable eating? From what I can see, it seems like she is having too much. ?? She doesn't always eat all of what I give her and sometimes eats more! Reassurance......

At her age, you want to keep tabs on her formula intake and go from there. She should get 26-32 oz of formula each day, and you can increase or decrease her solids as needed to get her there. Keep in mind that 26-32 oz is just an average...some babies naturally take less, some more. HTH!

Ok, thanks. That gives me an idea. She should likely take another bottle in the afternoon between lunch and dinner.
Appreciated..

Thanks this also helps me. My son is 5 1/2 months and just recently went through a HUGE growth spurt. We had been playing with solids-pretty much letting him taste something every now and again, but when the growth spurt occurred that was my indication that he needed solids to be a part of his diet. The first night he ate a whole bowl of sweet potatoes and then drank an 8oz bottle. This was about a week ago. Since then we have given him cereal/ fruit in the morning, 1-2 Table spoons of fruit/veggies and 2-3Tbs of the same thing for dinner. At the same time he is on the four hour E.A.S.Y. with a dream feed at 11pm. He has been drinking 6-8oz of a bottle or is on the breast for about 10 minutes. Yesterday though he only drank 5 1/2oz of a bottle at two feedings. I was a little concerned ???. Then tonight when I returned from class my husband told me that lo only drank 3 1/2 oz of milk ???. Now I am really concerned. I was at class, so my husband said that lo was hungry and kept eating as much as he gave him (of the solids). Is this what should happen? He usually eats his evening solids around 5pm and then has his bottle around 7pm. Everyone is telling me to give as much as he will take, but I am concerned that he did not have enough milk. I can tell that in the last week my lo has put on a lot of weight and is filling out nicely, but I am really frightened that he did not get enough milk tonight and I do not want to mess up his growth or energy. Is it really that bad or do I just need to adjust his solids? How do I give the solids? Can i count the milk that is mixed with the cereal (100 grams per about 3Tbs of cereal) as his milk intake? He doesn't usually eat it all but this is just so you know the amount. Is it best to give them with the milk or best to give them 2hrs later? I hear so many different ideas. Help!! Thanks.

Well, balancing solids with formula/breastmilk is an ever-changing game. It literally changes day by day. An occasional few days where he doesn't take much from his bottle is okay, so don't let it stress you out. The key is to make adjustments as needed and keep tinkering with the amounts. It sounds like the growth spurt has ended and his appetite has evened out, so you might cut back on the solids a bit and see if that helps. And yes, you can count the formula mixed with cereal. As for timing, it's really what works best for you and your LO...there's no real right or wrong way to do it!

Hi...im always trying to guess how much and my son is 8 months old!!! He isnt one who will ever stop eating so gaging how much is very tricky!! I give him what i feel he needs and if he seems to be going through a growth spurt or is still hungry i give him more.I have stopped letting other people tell me what he should be having or that he is having too much. While he is a big boy (20 pounds) he isnt overweight so im must be doing something right!!! He loves his food like his daddy and he sleeps well, what more can i ask for???

Let your baby guide you.I find if jakob wakes at night then it is time to up his solids. If he grizzles after lunch or dinner he is still hungry,i learn from his cues.Sure it is a guessing game,no baby is the same but go with your gut instinct. At this age theri milk is still the main source of calories and solids is just a top up.

Hope things go well for you.
