« on: April 02, 2006, 16:02:42 pm »
HI WAS WONDDERING IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. MY LITTLE GIRL IS 15 WEEKS OLD AND WEIGHS 15 LBS 7 OZ SHE WAS 10 LBS BORN. SHE SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT AND IS A TEXT BOOK BABY. THE PROBLEM IS THAT OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS SHE HAS BEEN REALLY FUSSY WHEN HAVING HER BOTTLE, SHE USED TO JUST LIE IN MY ARMS AND TAKE 7OZ BUT NOW SHE IS PUSHING THE BOTTLE OUT AND PREFERRING TO CHEW HER FISTS ! SHE TRIES PUTTING BOTH IN AND IS NOT INTERESTED IN HER MILK AT ALL I HAVE TO REALLY FIGHT WITH HER TO TAKE 5 OZ. WHEN I DO MANAGE TO GET 7OZ INTO HER AS SOON AS THE BOTTLE COMES OUT OF HERMOUTH BOTH FISTS GO STRAIGHT IN. IS THIS A SIGN OF TEETHING AND WILL SHE GO BACK TO TAKING HER BOTTLE PROPERLY OR IS THIS A SIGN THAT I NEED TO START WEANING HER I AM REALLY CONFUSED I HAVE READ SO MANY BOOKS ABOUT WEANING AND THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE SIGNS THEY SAY TO LOOK OUT FOR TO SAY WHEN YOUR CHILD IS READY TO WEAN. !!!!!!!

I NEED ADVICE
THANKS

Hi Rubys Mum,

My DD did the exact same thing at this age and my CHN said is probably her teeth so we use to put a bit of teething gel on her gums before each feed which did the trick. Also could you try a faster flowing teat as well?

HI,....i agree with the teat issue. My son did the very same thing.I had to go to a faster flow to keep him pacified. He simply got annoyed at the slow flow teat and literally gave up feeding!! It was too much work for him.I changed the teat and it all went back to normal.

Thought id share that too.all the best

Sucking fists is NOT a sign of hunger anymore. It only is for about 12 weeks, then it means something else. There are several reasons why babies suck their fists:

- for comfort of sucking
- discovering their hands
- soothing the gums (teething)

...

That hunger-handsucking reflex only stays for about three months and looks a wee bit different from older babies sucking the hands.

That's my experience anyway

Sounds like she is either teething or just discovered her hands or both- it should shift soon! It seems early to wean- Maybe try to give her lots of good fist in mouth time other than feeding . . Good luck! (My babe has been teething since 4 months and it has been very up and down.)

Hi I have found that my DD has been putting her hands in her mouth while i am trying to feed her for about 3-4 weeks. Last week her first tooth come thru and the second one had made an appearance this week. she still puts both hands in her mouth with the teat of the bottle so i really think it has something to do with teeth and it is more than likely it is a comfort thing.

Another thought...

My lo (9 months now) still wants to suck/chew when he is uncomfortable with a burp or other gas. That is often how I know he is gassy. Also, he won't nurse or take a bottle in this state (it also happens when he needs to have a bm, which can take a while). I know this would go against what everyone else has said but it could also be that the hole in the teat is too big and that your lo is swallowing a lot of air. I just switched my lo's teats to medium flow from fast because he was becoming very gassy and it seems to have helped. You may want to think of that next if the larger hole doens't help.

How often are you feeding? My DS started to lose interest in this bottles when I was feeding him evry 3 hours. When I changed it to every 4, he was much better.

Sounds like teething to me. Sometimes when babies begin teething they start feeding only to stop b/c of the pain in their gums. Just a thought:)
