Calcium-enriched foods, help me I'm clueless!
« on: April 05, 2006, 10:58:06 am »
Hi everyone, back here again with more problems :)

OK, I don't know if you remember my struggles to get ds to eat yoghurt a few weeks back, b/c I am worried about his calcium intake. To cut a long story short, I finally found a brand (fruit flavoured, live, natural yogurt) that he likes. Happy Mummy :)

BUT - it has made him severely constipated. Seriously - he didn't poo for 3 days, and when I cut out the yoghurt, his nappies were not just Code Browns, there were more like industrial incidents :o :o :o.

So, I'm thinking no yoghurt. Apparently, my mother says I was the same as a child - she couldn't give me dairy products until I was about 10 years old. Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!! What do I do? I don't dare try him on milk, then, do I?

How can I make sure he has enough calcium (and all the other goodies you get from dairy) in his diet?
Caroline :)

hi again

you could try soy yogurts and cheeses and check their calcium levels. broccoli and other green leafy type veggies have calcium too

i looked in "What to expect...toddler" and they include
also tofu, canned salmon and sardines
and say that on a dairy free diet it is "difficult (if not impossible) to get adequate calcium from diet alone." without milk they recommend possible calcium supplementation = vitamin, fortified OJ, fortified soy milk (with calcium, A and D)
