Mesh feeders
« on: April 07, 2006, 21:23:24 pm »
I bought some of those mesh feeders for my dd and was wondering what sorts of foods you all are using these for.  The most popular item I have seen is bananas.

TIA!

We use them for bananas and avocado, and as soon as they're in season I'll use them for berries too.

Stacy, they help the lo learn to feed themselves, you don't have to mash the food and they also filter out seeds and stuff like that.

We have tried cantelope and pears.  Gavin loves the texture, and he's teething and enjoyed them chilled.

Have fun!

Hi,

I just bought one of these too and tried banana... I don't think ds ate any of the banana though, just used the feeder to paint his whole high chair in banana slime :P Do you freeze the banana first?? Any other tip son getting him to eat from it?

Yeah, I've noticed that banana in these things makes a GIANT mess. DS loves it though and he does eat most of it. Keep at it Christa, he'll get the hang of it. Does Harrison take a paci? I think that helps a lot since the feeders are similar looking.

Just found this.

Christa, I never froze the banana but I did try frozen pears and that was good, it definitly cut down on the mess!  I've heard of women putting frozen peas in there before kids are ready for finger foods.  Bananas are messy, but it will help for him to like it.  Look over a list of foods that you can give babies that age and try each one of them.  Some babies like them and some babies don't.  Is he a good eater besides this?

Thanks, I'll keep trying, no biggie if he doesn't like it, its just that he doesn't even seem to get the concept tha there is food in there.

He does use a pacifier, but he's not a great eater, most "meals" are just a few bites of cereal and/or pureed baby food, but then he's to whiny and I don't want to make it a battle.

I love our mesh feeder (and so does DS). The only problem is cleaning the thing! Bananas especially get all caught up in the mesh, and I spend hours picking at it under hot water. But we've used it for bananas and avacadoes, and will probably use it for other small foods until he's ready for finger foods.

5 out of 5 stars EASY way to clean the mesh net!, August 15, 2002

This is really a wonderful product! My 6 month old son uses his all the time.
I found an easy way to clean the mesh part that I would like to share with every one. First- remove any large pieces of pulp or food left inside- don't worry about scrubbing it out or removing all the food. Second- mix 1/4 a scoop of an oxi-clean type cleaner with hot water in glass cup. Third- put the mesh bag in the glass- ring side up (you can hold it down with a spoon). Wait about 10 minutes. Pull the mesh bag out- rinse and clean with regular dish washing soap. Air dry. Mesh bag comes out sparkling white (so will your glasses if you have hard water stains!). The food simply disolves. Works really well with bananas!!!! No more brown colored mesh. No more time spent trying to pull small bits of food out from the mesh edges or from around the ring.
Now what to feed baby- everything but pudding and ice cream! Bananas, plums, peaches, melon, chicken, cooked carrots, potatoes, you name it. No grinding food, don't have to spend extra money on jars of baby food. This little gadget is GREAT!
