Crib pillows, blankets etc.....
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:38:11 am »
Bella is now 13 months and always had a small stuffed lamb in her crib that is her lovey and also a small, lightweight pink blanket that she loves.  I am wondering when she can use a pillow?  or heavier blanket? with summer coming its not a big deal but was curious when you could safely do this.  thanks

I found this question here:
http://www.babycenter.com/expert/toddler/toddlersleep/7533.html

It says avoid a pillow under 2 yo and only use a small firm one if you have to. Also that sleeping without a pillow is best anyway. I think the other advice I have seem is to make sure you use a tight fitting pillow case. Having said that, Fraser had a pillow (actually a small foam filled cushion without a cover) from around 18 months, and even then I would always move it away if his head was not on it when I went to check on him. He had a small lightweight quilt at around the same time. Now he uses a firm adult pillow and single quilt (in a bbb) and I have hidden the big soft pillow that he prefers  ::)

Guidelines must vary detween countries as, in the UK, quilts, pillows, etc are considered ok from 1 year. My dd has had a pillow from around 12 months as she had a cold at the time and the pillow helped to elevate her head and helped her to breathe a bit easier. I used an ordinary sized quite flat adult pillow in the cot - it fitted well and left no spaces between itself and the cot bars.

I gave dd a pillow for her 2 yr birthday and she has done well with it. Ds got one around 18 months and he kicks it away and sleeps without it. Both children have had blankets since they were about 9 months old. DD has several stuffed animals, all washable and washed often.
