6 month old not as hungry as /need less bottles?
« on: April 09, 2006, 17:02:53 pm »
My 6 month lo just does not seem as hungry this past week. She used to drink 6-7 ounces at each feeding no problem as well as having 3 meals a day since 17 weeks. Introduction of solids going very well, she seems to like them (the orange veggies more than anything). Now in the last few days her morning and early afternoon feedings she seems to be taking less. She is 18.8 pounds, 28 inches long (a very tall and good sized 6 month old) and I am wondering since she has grown so much is it normal for her growth to slow down a bit thus the decrease in amount taking at each feeding. Today has been the worst she took 5.5 this morning, 4 ounces at lunch but had solids at both.  She is sleeping well at night and napping well during the day. I am scared I am going to lose this if she goes off her routine. Does anyone else have there 6 month old take 3 bottles a day as I am thinking this might make her more hungry for her next bottle. Here is her schedule currently...

7:30 wake, bottle (typical 6, sometime 7-8)
8:45 1-2tbsp rice cereal, 4-5tsp fruits and veggies (combined)
9:30-11:15(11:30) nap
11:30 bottle (usually drinks the least at this, given in two portions) usually 6 total, getting less
12:30 solids 4-5 tsp heaping tsp veggies
1:30 nap at home or in buggy until 2:30-3:30
3:30 bottle typically 7-8 ounces
4:50-5:15 catnap
5:30 solids (1 tbsp rice cereal, 4-5tsp veggies)+1-2 ounces formula
6:30 bath, massage
6:45 bottle and bed 6-8 ounces
Sleeps until 7:30am with no night feedings.

She is typically drinking 30-32 ounces a day total, does she need this much or am I worrying if she gets less and how can I change this to get her maximizing her bottles?
Any reassurance is appreciated.
Sarah

My DD dropped from 4-3 bottles at 5 months  :o and at the time she was only on 2 solid meals a day. She was having 4x8oz bottles at 7,11,3 and 6.30. I had to force 4ozs into her at her 11am bottle, she would then wolf down her 3pm bottle and fuss with her bedtime bottle. She also sleeps through the night and i was worried she would start waking again as she wasn't having enough of her bedtime bottle. So i combined her 11&3 bottle and gave it in between at 1pm and this made a huge difference as she went back to drinking 8ozs at each bottle. She also has 2ozs mixed in with her breakfast and to get some more into her and start getting her use to having her milk with meals i give 2ozs with breakfast and lunch in a cup. The amount of formula at this age is 26-32ozs but remember all babies are different and will have more or less than this. As long as your baby is putting on weight and has plenty of wet nappies then that is fine. It also sounds like your little one is also doing well with solids which is great. So you could do this:

7:30 wake, bottle 8ozs
8:45 1-2tbsp rice cereal, 4-5tsp fruits and veggies (combined) add 1-2ozs of formula to this.
9:30-11:15(11:30) nap
12:00-  solids 4-5 tsp heaping tsp veggies
1:00 - bottle 8ozs
1:30 nap at home or in buggy until 2:30-3:30
4:50-5:15 catnap
5:30 solids (1 tbsp rice cereal, 4-5tsp veggies)+1-2 ounces formula
6:30 bath, massage
6:45 bottle and bed 8 ounces
Sleeps until 7:30am with no night feedings.

So this would give you a total of about 28ozs which is fine.

When my lo hit 6mth growth spurt, she drank 30-35oz plus solids but after few days she drinks 23-27oz plus solids.  I was told by my ped anywhere btwn 25-30oz is good or as long as your lo is gaining at a good rate.

Is she teething? Appetite can go way down while teething...

thanks for the replies. not sure if she is teething or not, definitely drooling a lot but that has been since 3 months.Natasha the routine looks great! I am going to watch her the rest of this week and if it continues so much with the 11 am bottle,  I will move things around as suggested. Another thing is, what amounts should I be adding for the solids, is she taking enough? should I add a snack between bottle at 1 and food at 5:30?thanks sarah

Sarah
I go through this with Calum as well - ups and downs.

At the moment we are on an up and he takes 3 meals + approx. 30oz milk s day  ;D or the down phases he takes no more than 26oz per day and its a battle  :(

A few weeks ago I decided not to worry about it anymore, I gave him 5oz at his first 3 feeds then 10oz for his last feed (on 4 bottles a day), he started taking them again and I started topping them up to 6oz.

Have you also tried to give some milk in a sippy of open cup - I am sure DS thinks he is 6months going on 6years, he loves drinking from an open cup and tries to grab it off me. Sometimes I am resigned to 3 - 4oz in bottle, 0.5 - 1oz in food and the rest sipped between mouthfuls in sippy or cup.

Thanks Calums Mom, Yeah I am so amazed how there hunger can change so much from day to day. She also thinks she is much older than she is as she likes to drink out of a cup, sippy or cup with a straw and is rejecting the bottle when offered during a meal. Today was pretty good as she took all her bottles pretty well, except her 11:30 bottle which she took 5 then took another 1.5 ounces an hour later. Can you suggest how to give meats? She just doesn't love them, I have tried chicken and she makes a face I think because of the texture. Should I add milk to the chicken or should I add it to her veggies?  I would love some suggestions :)
Thanks!!!

You can give a snack after PM nap if you find she is hungry. I do sometimes but lately DD is to busy playing to eat  ;)
As forthe meat try mixing in with the veges as that is what i do. Do you puree down the meat or keep it in small bite size?

My LO is 5.5MO and she's been having weired feeds for the past 3 days.  Dropping back to eating 4 oz and then hungry after 3 hrs cuz she didn't take her normal 7oz.  I wondered if it was time to go to a 4.5 or 5 hr feed schedule but will give it a couple more days to see if she rides it out.  The daycare teacher (has 2 LOs) said she thought DD was teething from all the drool.

Casey, i have been on a 4.5 routine for ages.

Sarah, I only add meat to other veggies, like you say the textures a bit 'gritty'. I either buy Heinz chicken, or I blend down my own.

I am using the heinz pureed meats (chicken) will start beef and lamb soon.  I tried adding it to the sweet potatoes but she semed to know it was in there and made some faces. How should I do my own pureed meats to taste better and make less gritty? Thanks for all your info!

I asked a mum from italy about this, she advised blending the chicken with olive oil - I have tried this and it works for us. Heinz also add lemon juice.
