Refusing a bottle question
« on: April 09, 2006, 17:27:32 pm »
Hello

My 15 week old wont take a bottle, have tried loads of things...

My question is, is it possible that once i start weaning her that she will be more likely to take is as she will be used to different things being in her mouth?

Many thanks

Kellie

To be honest, I'm not sure that starting solids would necessarily make all the difference. Have you read the sticky on giving bottles at the top of this page. I know that might sound like a daft question but some people miss it.

If you are breastfeeding all the following organisations recommend waiting until your LO is 6 months old (not 4-6 months) before starting solid food.
World Health Organization
UNICEF
US Department of Health & Human Services
American Academy of Pediatrics
American Academy of Family Physicians
American Dietetic Association
Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
Health Canada

So you've got a bit of a wait yet!

Its OK - wasnt planning on weaning now, just wondered for when the time comes.

Thanks for your reply though - and yes, i have read the advice...none of which has worked for me so far...

That's tough. Sorry. The thing that finally seems to work for some people is giving it to a sleepy baby or using a bottle to do a dreamfeed.

Off topic - but related to this page.  I see often to "read the sticky" and I have no clue what that means or where it is?

Thanks
Stacey

Stacey, the sticky is a post that is located at the top of the breastfeeding forum page.  It is called a sticky because it doesn't move from that location so you can easily find it each time.  I hope that helps.  Let me know if you need more direction.

my dd (4 months) wouldn't take a bottle either. we had some success with the 'booby bottle' http://www.adiri.com/main/index.php, but eventually gave up and decided that i just wouldn't be leaving her while she was still breastfeeding (no hardship for me personally as my lo is an ivf baby who we waited 5 years to have so 6 months of non-seperation is cool by me!! lol)

i think if you get to 6 months and start weaning without any success with a bottle you'd be as well just trying to introduce a sippy cup. that way you won't have to worry about weaning them off the bottle after trying to get them on to it for so long!  :P
