How to get rid of the bottle....
« on: April 10, 2006, 02:05:27 am »
I am looking for ways to begin weaning from the bottle. My dd has amorning bottle, a bottle after a morning and afternoon nap and then again before bed. I have tried to give milk from a sippy cup- no luck. How do you start to get rid of the bottles ....most importantly if I can get rid of the day ones, how do I eliminate the morning and bedtime ones? At what age should kids no longer be drinking from bottles?

I believe Tracy says that bottles should be gone by age 2, but we got rid of them when Tyler turned 1. I was sooo afraid that it would get harder as he got older. We put whole milk in one of his bottles to make sure he liked it (he did) and started there. I think we dropped the lunchtime bottle first, we just gave him solids and a sippy of milk instead (we also added a mid-morning snack and sippy at that time). After giving his appetite a few days to adjust, we dropped the afternoon bottle and offered a snack and a sippy instead. We waited a few days then got rid of the breakfast bottle and offered breakfast instead, and finally, the bedtime bottle (which was much easier than I'd anticipated!).

It took about a month before Tyler was drinking enough milk from the sippy. He just took little sips here and there, so we offered it to him throughout the day and gave him lots of cheese, yogurt, and other dairy to make up the difference. Once the bottles were completely gone, he started drinking a lot more from the sippy so we only offered it at meals and snacks. Good luck!

My daughter sounds like she was the same.I tried all the cups and she always ended up with milk all over her.I ended up keep on giving her milk in the bottle but not with the teats(cant think of the name, the stout you have in the cups). She had milk 3 times a day,but once she got 1 she had it in a cup that i found in my home country and her night time was still in the bottle until she was 2.She is now 4 years old and still has milk 3 times a day in a normal cup.Think some kids just like milk and is better then them wanting juice all the time I think...

My son is 19  months old and about 2 months ago He was getting about 4 bottles of milk a day.  I kept telling DH we needed to wean but he was reluctant ( yes my husband!)  Soon we were down to only 1 bottle and one nipple and my son as always chewing on it.  I said when he chewed a hole in it it was GONE!  Well he did .... DH asked me to go buy one more.  I said NO.  We went a couple of days with little to NO milk but then my son realized he could have milk from a cup too.  He did not miss it too much.  We will put him down with a sippy with water some nights but he usually does not drink too much of it... he just likes to hold it.

So I guess I suggest .. be strong and once you decide get rid of all bottles.  YOU CAN DO IT!
