confused...

My 9.5 mo old was at the Dr today.  He is 90% for length and head circumference and was previously 75% for weight and now has dropped to 50%.  He is eating 3 solid meals per day but the Dr said he might not be getting enough cals.

This is our current schedule:

600 wake and bf
700 solids (4 tbsp cereal and 4 tbsp fruit)
900-1030 nap
1100 bottle 5-6 oz EBM
1200 lunch (4tbsp veg, 4tbsp fruit, 1 tbsp meat)
200-330 nap
330-400 bottle 4 oz (sometimes 5 oz)
430 solids supper (4tbsp cereal, 4tbsp veg, 4 tbsp fruit)
700 bottle and bed (anywhere from 4-6 oz)

He is only getting EBM by bottle.  Haven;t introduced egg yet b/c being tested for dairy allergy (broke out in hives with cows milk).  also recovering from stomach flu over w/e so haven't been giving meat.

should i be letting him eat as much solid as he wants??  i had done this before but found it interfered with his bottle intake or does this not matter at this age.

also, he gags and chokes with lumpier consistencies...i guess just persist slowly right??

sorry for all the questions.

thanks,

Well, have you tried cheese or yogurt?  There are soy cheeses and dairy free yogurts.  Unfortunately, I don't want to suggest too many foods because if your LO has allergies, the doc may want to wait on introducing foods such as egg yolk, nuts (though definitely avoid peanuts), seeds, beans (like hummus).  All of those are excellent sources of fatty acids, good fats and calories.  I would try to up the protein/fats and decrease the amount of fruits and veggies so that they equal each other.  For example, instead of giving 4 Tbsp cereal, 4 Tbsp fruit, 1 Tbsp meat - try 2 Tbs cereal, 2 Tbs fruit/veggie and 2-3 Tbsp meat.

If you do decide to introduce any of the above foods, do so very carefully and wait at least a week in between introductions to make sure there is no reaction.

You can let him eat as much solids as he wants, but only if it does not interfere with his milk intake.  The best source of complete nutrition that he has is breast milk.  That will remain the most important food until at least 1 year of age, no matter how well established solids are.

And as for lumps, just keep trying it slowly.  Some babies take a while before they tolerate lumpy textures.  Mine is 11 months and just starting the lumpy Stage 3 baby foods.

I'm surprised the dr was concerned...once babies start to become young toddlers (especially once they're mobile), they naturally start to thin out a bit. Tyler dropped from 75th to 50th when he turned 1 and that's where he's stayed. DH and I are both naturally small framed, so it made sense for him to be a bit on the thin side as well. Keep in mind that breastmilk contains the richest source of calories, so trading breastmilk for solids probably won't help. Avocado is a great source of fat, so you might start offering that if you haven't already.
