i have a question here - i have heard of lo's being allergic to bm but that it is very very rare. so i am curious if anyone can enlighten me as to how a lo is allergic to his/her own mother's milk? is it the milk that they are allergic to? or perhaps what is in the milk b/c of what the mother is ingesting??

I've heard of this as well. I'd like to know the answer to that as well.

From what I understand, its to the proteins in milk, my friend's baby went through 3 lots of formula to find one that suited her, one was so "watered down" to remove anything that might cause allergies she was back to feeding every 2 hours like a newborn at 4 months! She is doing much better now as had not regained her birth weight at 2 months which set off alarm bells.

Hi again,

The doctors have temporarily reversed their decision to wean onto formula immediately, so now my wife is trying to get her milk supply back as it had almost gone, she has been prescribed Domperidon (sp). They did a blood and skin test on Allie today to try and find out exactly what the problem is.

Allie has lost 6 ounces since Thursday so is now down to 12 pound 12 ounces at 22 weeks old. She has always been a small baby anyway so we are always expecting her to be towards the bottom end of the weight curve but losing 6 ounces in less than 1 week is concerning.

We have two more appointments at the hospital over the next week to monitor progress, at least they are now paying attention I guess.

I guess as long as the milk supply comes back and they find out exactly what the problem is we will be able to move forward, but the amount of incorrect/unsound advice we have received from professionals is breathtaking. Particularly when dealing with a baby who is really quite unhappy seemingly with more than one health issue.

Wiki, the situation you describe with your friends baby not being back at her birth weight by two months must have been tremendously difficult and worrying for her parents, puts our situation into perspective. Glad they found a way to manage the situation.

Terry

Terry I just wanted to send you and your family my families best wishes.
Coping with your daughters difficulties and the useless way the medical staff have been messing you about must be a lot of strain. I hope we can all support you and help you through all this.

Hugs for you all

Ennypen, many thanks, you are very kind.

We feel better that they have conducted tests which should at least provide some factual basis for them to determine treatment. We now have in fact three appointments over the next week, the paediatrician, a dermatologist and a dietician. I am finally seeing the benefit of all the tax's we pay !! Although in this case I would rather it hadn't come to that !

I think to summarise this, I would strongly recommend anyone who suspects their baby has health issues to make an absolute nuisance of themselves with the doctors/gp's and not to feel bad about it at all. If you allow yourself to be brushed off by them, they appear to do it. From where I am standing, Mums and Dads know best !!

The other thing we have done for periods of time is to keep a fairly detailed journal of each day, diet, sleep times, skin condition, medication etc. Its a bit of a drag to do with everything else these small bosses require but it really helps to rationalise and organise things so that in the event something changes or a new pattern develops, you have some history against which any problems can be compared to help isolate causes. Also, it helped us to appreciate that although our situation was problematic in some areas, there were in fact some areas which had improved. Without it, in the heat of battle, we have found it very difficult to recollect the details with enough accuracy to be of relevance.

Again, many many thanks to everyone who has offered their advice and support.

Terry, Sairah and Alyssa (the small boss)

Agreed. Sounds like they are putting her through the same tests as my friend's baby had in London.
All the best and keep at them!

Hi there! Just to let u kno that we r going through a very similar thing with our lo. we switched to bottles when he was 4 months old as I could no longer bf and have had a nightmare from then onwards... LO hardly ate cried all the time etc THey diagnosed lactose intollerance and reflux as the prob so switched formula (PS HE had terrible eczma when bf totally disappeared on formula!). Things were better for a bit then he started not eating again and being sick a lot so in the end they did an endoscopy...we are currently awaiting results but just waNTED TO let u kno what we'd been told...its very difficult to assess an allergy as babies result neg to test untill about 3 yrs of age so its just process of elimination unless u do an endoscopy where they analyse stomach lining. hope this helps

Hi Yaya,

Firstly, I do hope the endoscopy brings clarity to the situation with your little one, a proper diagnosis will at least mean that the treatment will be correctly targeted.

I had a fear that they wouldn't be able to test for allergies in young babies. After all this time and so many different 'theories' from the doctors, if these tests do not reveal anything definate, we are sorely tempted to just stop all the medications for reflux and eczema (except for a cream) for a few days to just try and understand where we actually are, I am not at all certain that the reflux is a problem any longer, she might have grown out of it because it hasn't surfaced for about 3 weeks now.

Allie's eczema does look a bit better today, the paediatrician suspected a low grade skin infection as well and prescribed antibiotics. These seem to be making an impact as she has not tried to scratch her face so much today and the redness has reduced a bit. I am convinced if we can reduce the eczema to a manageable level we will start to get visibility of the overall picture.

The thing my wife and I are most sad about is that we have only seen very fleeting glimpses of the 'real' Allie since she was born. Up to about a month ago, Allie was vocalising a lot but as this eczema and reflux took over, she basically pretty much stopped doing it altogether. We do get some occasional smiles out of her too but its not that frequent. I know that we would be having so much more great fun with her if she was feeling well.

Anyway, fingers crossed for both our little one's Yaya.

Take care,

Terry

i know how you feel terry - it is horrible to see your lo suffering through the first months of life. since you are making so much  progress with everything else, i just wanted to caution to you that stopping the reflux meds might not be such a great idea as of yet..speaking from experience with my dd...i too thought she had grown out of the reflux and stopped the meds but just made matters a whole lot worse - after she had non stop crying again for days and days the meds kicked in again, but it took a good month for her to be normal and happy again. as things are going forward for you guys right now i don't want to see something like this hold your lo back kwim? my dd is still on zantac to this day - and although i haven't had to 'up' the dosage for some time now - i do know she still isn't ready to be off of it - as i sometimes lower the dosage and she starts showing 'reflux' signs.

Hi Teezee,

Good point, to be honest, its really just me feeling like we have lost control of the situation more than we are comfortable with due to poor advice from the medical people. Hopefully we will get the test results early next week which will at least idenfity (hopefully) what we are or aren't dealing with. We can then make a proper plan with confidence for dealing with things. You are quite right though, I most certainly wouldn't want the reflux to re-surface, although she had the silent variety it was still very unpleasant for her before.
