Are her feeds long enough?
« on: April 13, 2006, 02:02:38 am »
Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site and am currently reading The Baby Whisperer Book.
I am implementing EASY for my 16wk old daughter who has never had a routine before and used to constantly snack.

So far so good, she is almost sleeping through the night and I have regulated her feeds to four hourly. I feed from one side each feed and have noticed that she feeds for 8mins maximum.  It doesn't seem enough. I would expect to feed for at least 20 mins as per many books. Should I be concerned?

Looking forward to your replies

Millie

Please put your mind at ease.  Is she gaining weight?  Does she seem satisfied after a feed?  Does she last the 4 hours without complaint (at least most of the time)?  When you moved to the 4 hour, she probably became a more efficient eater (lucky for you).  My daughters were/are the same way and I dubbed them "super suckers".  I was super worried the first time around, but came to enjoy that she ate so quickly.  As long as she's happy and continues gaining weight, don't worry.

My 14 week old is about 16 lbs and eats very efficiently, too - he is done in less than 15 min and at night feeds even better, in less than 10.  As long as your lo is healthy and gaining weight she is getting enough!  A friend of mine asked the health nurse how you can know they are eating long enough (ie, not just getting the foremilk) and she said that the baby's poop gets very green if they aren't getting the other parts of the milk (eating enough)....

I think you shouldn't worry as long as she seems content with your schedule. Great sleeping!! The important thing is to continue to pay attention to her cues and watch out for any signs of a growth spurt as you may need to feed more (e.g cluster feeding or a short period of a 3 hours EASY) to ensure your milk supply is developed to meet her needs.
8 minutes is a perfectly respectable feeding time. It's scary how efficient they can get!

Thanks for all your replies.  It has put my mind at ease.  Yes she is gaining weight and seems content.  Poo looks OK as well!

Sorry I meant to post sooner. I just wanted to say that any lenght of time is normal from 4mins up 40mins at your LO's age. As long as she is happy, content and has wet nappies dont worry. Your doing a great job, keep up the good work!!!!
