Do you wake to burp?
« on: April 13, 2006, 17:03:57 pm »
Hi ladies,

I have a 4 week old who is breastfed.  My question is, do you wake your baby to burp if they fall asleep while nursing?  I tend to during the day, but in the evening and night feeds if the baby has had an adequate feed and falls asleep I just put her down.  She sometimes spits up a little, but doesn't seem to get many gas pains.

So, just a question to see what you do.
Thanks

With my DD I would maybe give her a few quick pats on the back as I put her down in her crib to see if anything obvious came up, otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it, especially since she doesn't seem to be in any pain.

I have a 7wk old girl.  I almost always burp her after every feeding and before offering my 2nd breast.
My baby has reflux, so even after i burp her she spits up.  Also, she can wakes up and get fussy because of gas.
I found that she enjoys being burp and she can burp eventhough she is asleep.  It just takes longer.

Hope this helps.

When I breastfed, I would burp even at night. But I would just lay him on my chest as to not wake him and pat his back. He would usually burp. I do that now even when I feed him a bottle in middle of night and when I dreamfeed. I would rather do it then, so he doesn't wake earlier with gas or spitting up. I have even just sat him upright for a few minutes since sometimes the burps come up by themselves.

If your lo doesn't seem to have any gas pains than I wouldn't worry too much about burping her at night when she is already asleep.  I would definitely do it during the day though as you currently are.  At night I would always burp my DS after the first breast before I offered the second.  He would be so relaxed on the second breast and would drift off to sleep so I knew that he hadn't really swallowed a lot fo air.  If you find that your lo starts waking with gas pains or spitting up then you will probably have to start burping.

My lo was always a light sleeper and if I even tried to burp him he would wake up!  If you are able to do it like Erin M suggested, as you lay your DD in the crib, than that would be your best bet to avoid any problems.

I found that I didn't need to burp at night, even though we did during the day. His feeding seemed to be 'calmer' and he took in less air or maybe something magic was happening! You could keep her upright and see if it comes up but if she's comfortable I wouldn't worry as the PP said.

Although my son was very gassy in the day I didnt seem to need to bother all that much at night. Maybe because he was sleepy he didnt gulp his food down as fast, I dont know. I use to give him a few little pats on the back just incase there was something big stuch in there but very rarely did anything come up. If she seems fine then I'm sure your allright to continue  :)

Thanks ladies.  As you can tell I have little time to check in lately!  I am just checking your responses now!  Things are going well.  I don't burp much at night as she only feeds from one side at night and is right out of it by the time she finishes.  I try just a couple pats as I am swaddling her and putting her in her crib.  Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, but she doesn't seem to fuss either way.
