Veggies first??
« on: April 13, 2006, 22:00:57 pm »
I am beginning solids w/ my dd in two days. I have heard several times that it is important to start out w/ vegetables instead of fruit. I was just curious what other BW have done. All I have ever fed my dd is rice cereal so far. What food is the best to start with. If I do start w/ a veggie, how long before I can add a fruit. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

i know that the first three we tried were carrots, sweet potato and peas (we didn't want Ethan turning orange!).  i know i figured that this would help fight against getting used to too much of a sweet flavour but figure that veg likely have more nutrients in too (but i guess it depends on the veg!)
oh, yeah, and squash was early too!
what we did was introduce one food at a time, early in the day (breakfast or lunch) for three days running before trying the next.  that way you can monitor for any adverse reactions to anything and know EXACTLY what might cause difficulties for your lo, especially as three days means you aren't getting the effect of some other food...
HTH!
good luck!

We started with fruit mixed with rice cereal first and DD ate veges after no worries. We tried apple first and pear and then pumpkin as a first vege. However we have been lucky as DD has not refused a single thing and loves her food which is great as she has never been a big milk drinker.

No need to worry about developing a sweet tooth.  In fact, breast milk is sweet, so you might do better with a fruit first anyway.  Our order, so far, was:
banana
sweet potato
acorn squash
avacado
pear
butternut squash
mango
zucchini
yogurt will be next then probably apple and broccoli.

Good luck!

Our pediatrician recommended starting with veg first, also, since LOs usually don't have problems getting used to sweet stuff. I used the order of the list of foods from "Nanny Wisdom" to introduce them to him. So we started with:
- zucchini
- potatoes
- green beans
- parsnips
- squash
- avocado
- carrots
- applesauce
- pears
- bananas
- peaches
