I really want my daughter to sleep 7pm to 7am (I am rubbish before 7am).

I think I am going to have to wake her from her nap in order to get the balance of day and night sleep but she is really grumpy if I wake her up at the moment.

Can anyone answer these questions for me:

Is it possible for us to manipulate how much nap time and night time sleep they have or will it only work if we go with them?

How do you wake a baby and get through the grumpy bit?

Is it better to keep the nap and change bed time? (I really like her going down early (7pm) but the early starts around 6 at the moment (which we aren't used) are driving us mad when DS sleeps until 7/730am. Both children have a bath together and we then get a quiet evening.

Not sure which direction I should move her sleep in.

Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Best Wishes

J

p.s When DS was born DD was doing 12 hours at night and 2hours 20 during the day. Now it's 11 / 11.5 at night and around 1hr 40 during the day. I though it was because she couldn't get through a sleep cycle in the day but I am thinking it is all about the amount of sleep.

i hear you on the grumpy mood ! we had to start waking Ryan from his nap as it was affecting his bedtime . he could nap anywhere between 2/3+ hrs . he wasn't tired at 7.30pm . we would put him down but he would be awake till nearly 9pm . it was getting worse and worse , he was resisting bedtime . we had to wake him after 2hrs napping , yes he was really grumpy , we then tried to make the nap a little earlier . he goes to nap at 12.00 asleep by 12.30pm and we don't let him sleep any later than 2 pm . he soon adjusted to this and now most naps he wakes up himself , sometimes can still be grumpy if i wake him . when i first started waking him , he would look at me , then put his head down and try go back. he goes to bed at 7.30 and aslepp by 8pm . he wakes between 7.30am and 8am . i would change the nap if you have more time to yourself in the evening . you could change bedtime untill there's no nap then back to early bed

It's been years since Nathan did 12hrs overnight sleep regardless of napping or not. No nap days he will sleep around 11hrs overnight and days when he's napped and taken longer to fall asleep at night he probably on does 10hrs plus 1.5hr nap. His bedtime has shifted out to 7.30-8pm though on days when he's had a nap and he does tend to sleep in later in the morning. So I do think you possibly could consolidate and get 12hrs if you manipulate the nap, but you also risk having night wakings if she's overtired from being woken from a nap.

Although I don't like the early starts, I much preferred the 7pm bedtime as I felt it was truely relaxing time.

As far as waking grumpy, I find I just have to wait it out - holding, perhaps looking at something outside etc, but I think they just have a need to "vent" for whatever reason and the more I try to distract Nathan, the madder he seems to get.

It's a bit of trial and error I think.

I had totally forgot that they kinda get use to waking up from naps at a certain time. i kinda had it in my head that she would be waking up grumpy forever and ever and ever :)

Thanks

Just read the other post. Thanks for your reply. We've been away over Easter so once things are back to normal I think I am going make a note of the naps and night time sleep to see if there is a pattern and then work from that. I know what you mean about making her overtired. Not something I want to do. DD was up at 6am this morning. Had 45 mins in the car on the way back from our break and went down at 7pm (refused a late nap but not surprised by that). I hope it's a 7am waking and not a 6!!!! I was quite amazed at how long she lasted today.

Will keep you all posted and welcome anymore input.

Cheers

J

harrison is grumpy when woken from naps - but I know how I feel if I get woken from a deep sleep - feel kind of sick. I just sit with him for a little while and maybe watch some tv, then get him a snack and he's fine!
