to catnap or not?
« on: April 18, 2006, 03:05:26 am »
I was wondering when the catnap (late afternoon nap) should be eliminated?  My dd is 5 and a half months old.  She is napping well in the morning (about 2 hours) and in the afternoon (about an hour and a half) but is resistant to go down for her catnap, even though she appears tired.  Yesterday she wouldn't go down for her power nap at all and today she only catnapped for 20 mintues and then was up fussing until I went in to get her.  Does she need a catnap at her age?  If I tried to extend both her morning and afternoon naps by fifteen minutes would she need the catnap?
This is what her daily schedule looks like:
7 a.m. - wake, breastfeed, cereal
9 a.m. - nap
11 a.m. - wake and feed
1 p.m. - nap
3 p.m. - wake and feed
5 p.m. - power nap
6:30 p.m - feed, cereal
7:15 p.m. - bath stories, bed
Thanks,
Laurie

my dd has a similar schedule to you and is 7 months old.  The catnap is always a fight.  I have decided that during this time would be when we would run a few errands or get out to the mall.  She often falls asleep in the car for 15 minutes or so and it takes the edge off.  Someday's she needs it, others, like today, she doesn't and she's up for 4 hours.  I would take each day as it comes.  If you try and no luck after 20 minutes than let it go, if she sleeps roll with it.  They are in that weird phase of needing it some days and not the other.
