To big (old) for pat/shh?
« on: April 18, 2006, 11:36:56 am »
OK,
Since i got word of pat/shh it has been a miracle for our spirited lo. It was just what we needed, and it worked so well so and so quickly for us. Our dd was only sleeping 1-2 hours at a time and would never sleep longer than 3-31/2 at night. I was getting so frustrated and so tired, But as soon as i started pat/shh and EASY routine it was great.
My problem now is that our dd has learnt to crawl and pull her self up in her cot (crib), so now when i try to do pat/shh she just sits up and cries and crawls of to the other corner of her cot and unless i hold her down kicking and screaming i cant do the pat/shh any more?? i don't know what to do??
She will go down really well during the day for her naps, but for some reason she has been kicking up a stink the last couple of nights when we try to put her to bed??
I'm really not sure what to do now? i don't want to rock her to sleep...
any ideas??

At this stage Tracy suggests to do PD without the PU for when your LO stands and/or sits up in the crib.  Everytime she sits up lay her back down and reassure her with your voice.

If she is standing up and not able to get down in her cot make sure suring your play times in the day that you practice 'sitting' from standing with her.

Now that she is newly mobile she loves to explore and maybe that is what she is trying to do in her cot?  Have you tried putting her in there for a bit of playtime so she has explored it?  Also maybe she is needing a little more hands off approach.  Does she cry as soon as you put her down at night?  Maybe try reassuring with only your voice at 1st and see if that helps.

HTH,

Richelle

Oh i don't even know were to start. Some night s she will go down OK and wake about and hour to an hour and a half later with not much to resettle her, and other nights like tonight it took hours and 2 bottle to get her to sleep. I'm not sure where to look and were the problem really lies... is it me with accidental parenting?? Do we need to changer or tweak her routine? is she more hungry and need another bottle? She is not a settled sleeper? and does not sleep longer that 4 hours?
just feeling frazzled and confused as what to do?

Hi,

In regards to accidental parenting, you answered your own question in the next sentence!  At 10 months your LO doesn't need a feed at night she needs sleep.

Could I be right in saying that you have gotten to a point where you don;t do the same thing to try and get her back to sleep when she wakes at night?  AT her age it is very difficult to change old habits but would only take a week IF you stayed consistent.  You need to formulate a plan and STICK to it.  If you decide to PUPD for every waking then you must carry through doing PUPD for EVERY waking, no bottles, don;t pick her up, reassure her quietly with your voice, "It's OK, mommy is here, it is time for sleep".  Once you do something different like cuddles or bottle, it is like starting fromt the beginning all over again, not to mention being very confusing for your LO.

Let us know how you get on,

Richelle

If you want me to have a peep at your routine I'll see if I can help - not that I'm an expert but I know from experience that sometimes you can't see the wood through the trees when it comes to your own baby!

I know this post is a bit old but I've been scrolling thru the posts to see if can find any to help match up my wee one. I will continue with the pd for M who is doing the same thing in her crib. I have been doing pu/pd but when I pick her up she thinks its time to play. She never cries but will play for ARRRGGHH too long in bed before sleeping. This too, has only just started with us over hte last week. PU/PD hasn't really been working. I can't ever no matter what, seem to get her to wind down. Again, aside from restraining her which would likely make her go slighlty mad. I will find a resolution to this problem with everyone's posts I'm sure! It's so frustrating because we have not had ANY problems, sleep or otherwise until now! GRR :(

Ohhhh Sigh......
I don't know? ::)
I think i have come to the conclusion that maybe this is just her.... and no matter what i do or don't do she will be an unsettled sleeper. She is a Spirited baby all the way, and I'm not sure if there is any thing that will help us, so maybe if we just get through it best we can, it might be ok?

What do u think?  :)

I'm a bit stumped as your routine looks pretty good.  I would have expected to see a bottle first thing or at breakfast time - is she feeding alot in the night so she's not hungry for it?  Have you considered the gradual weaning for the night time bottle (there's a sticky on the night wakings board)?  I wonder if you could get her to have a bottle first thing rather than after her nap she might want a bit more lunch or does she already seem to eat well at mealtimes?  We've found an evening meal with plenty of carbohydrates helps with hunger overnight - so potatoes, pasta, rice, bread etc. (though not altogether of course!).  I think you need to be satisfied first that your LO is not truly hungry for a bottle when she wakes in the night then you can tackle the night wakings without that nagging doubt.

The other thing that strikes me in your first post is that maybe when you're trying to do shush/pat PD etc. your LO just wants you to leave her alone to go to sleep!  What does she do when you first put her down?  Zander often immediately cries but I say goodnight and leave the room and within seconds he's stopped and started settling (shouting, moaning, babbling etc.).  If he carries on crying then I'll go straight back but the majority of the time he's fine.  Is there a chance you're responding too soon and to her settling cries rather than her distressed cries?
