2 hours feeds
« on: April 18, 2006, 20:08:11 pm »
hello,
I'm new here.  I've read Tracy's Book when I was pregnant and was very excited about it.  My son is 4 weeks old.  He's about 7 lbs, 1 oz.  I've pumped and only yield about 2 oz.  I'm trying to get on the EASY, but am having a hard time with it.  It seems that he eats about 1.5 to 2 hours during the day and 2.5 to 3 hours during the night.  It seems so short in between feeds.  I don't know if it is because he's small ( he was 6 lbs, 7 oz when he was born) or I'm feeding him too soon.    And, he falls asleep on the breast.  It seems that a diaper change in between feeds was the only way to wake him up.  I wanted to find out how can I extend his feeds without him crying out in hunger and how can I get him to wake up during the day after feeding?

thanks

Hello!

I'm new to the boards also. My LO is 8 months old now.

When he was 4 weeks old he also ate every 2 hours pretty much around the clock. It's difficult at that age because they tend to always fall asleep when they're nursing. During the day I would feed him and then change his diaper so that he would wake up after he ate. Then I would try to keep him up for a few minutes by singing or talking to him until he went back to sleep. At night I would change his diaper first before feedings (to wake him up) and then lay him down right after he finished. This is how I started EASY and gradually the awake times during the day lengthen and gradually your LO will start wanting to eat less frequently also.

My pediatrician kept telling me I could stretch out the amount of time between feedings, but I never could figure out how to do that without a lot of crying! Maybe someone else has thoughts on that. I just watched his cues and waited until he was ready.

Hope that helps a little! Hang in there- the first six weeks are the most difficult!

Sounds like your little guy is normal.  You can expect a 2 hour routine for quite sometime.  Mine was at a 2 or 2.5 hr routine until 2.5 months.  You are lucky that you have longer during your nights.  I'm jealous!

In regards to pumping, you just have to keep at it.  Be consistent about it as well.  2 oz is just fine, especially at the beginning.

Thanks for the feedback!  I was wondering him eating every 2 hours and falling asleep while eating was normal.

I agree with daisymelan. Completely normal. I'm also jealous as I didn't get longer intervals at night for a while! Maybe 2-3 months I can't remember exactly.
