Need to ditch the dummy
« on: April 20, 2006, 12:22:10 pm »
 ???
Hi Everyone
I posted earlier today about my son and his night wakings looking for his dummy.
So has just had his lunchtime sleep in his buggy (we had to go out today) and did it without the dummy and just his cuski. he protested for about half hour but was outside so didn't seem as loud!!!
Feel that I may have been cheating though because was in buggy not at home.
Anyway - need some advice on how to get shut of the dummy gently but effectively.
Any ideas???

Why again do you want rid of it?  Do you just think he is too old for it - how old again?  I am a big believer in comfort items and if they really like it and sleep well with it, when they are old enough then say buy/bye to it but for now, do you think it's his comfort item??

no he was waking for it around 15 times a night but not looking for it himself. Actually managed to cold turkey over the weekend without too much stress. He also has a cuski (comfort thing) and that seems to have been his saviour. And last night he only woke the once so is good.

That's great! Hopefully he won't miss it too much.  Our son had to give it up at 12 months because of a cold that lasted forever and he just couldn't breath with his soother and stuffy nose - if was our little saviour.
If he is up all the time looking for it, your right, it's a hassle.  I hope it works out.  Keep giving him his little comfort item instead and hopefully he will get it  :)

We get rid of it about 3 weeks ago. I tell you what I did.
I took 2 pacis and cut them in half, then I left them on the balcony. Natalia saw them and was very suprised, so did I.
I told her a story about a squirel, who came from the roof and cut them with his sharp teeth.
Natalia wasn't mad at all, but when the nap time came she cried  terrible. I gave her the right paci at night for maybe 4 more nights, but took immediately in the morning, so she didn't notice.  Then she slept with the broken ones.
After 2 weeks of sleeping with broken pacis, she couldn't hold them in her mouth and it made her very very mad, so she decided to put them out on the balcony again - for the squirel.
Once she did that, she sleeps without paci.
I couldn't make cold turkey for her, cause she has a great memory. Besides I have tried to rid of it 4 times before - without good results.
Now, when she is older, she could understand more - even that little squirel could need it, too :)

My oldest daughter gave her dummy to Santa after we had the baby.  She was 3 years and 2 months.  We had a chat before the baby was born and between us decided that dummies were for babies.  We let her keep it for a while after the baby arrived as we didn't want to make too many changes too quickly for her.  The good thing was that by this point she was only having the dummy for sleep times and not during the day.
She parted with it no problem.  I did catch her beside the moses basket asking Sarah if she could borrow her dummy but thankfully she never took it again after that!!!!!
We told her that Santa had taken the dummies to give to other babies who didn't have them.  It seemed to work for us.  As it is so far from Christmas, you could invent a fairy who takes them for babies who need them more.  We did that with her bottles.  Told her the bottle fairy had taken them away and left her some money to go to the shops to choose her own beakers.  That went well too.

Good luck
 :)
