Stomach bug and breastfeeding - help please
« on: April 19, 2006, 17:35:37 pm »
Hi, I have had a tummybug all day, vomiting and runs as well.  Nightmare.  Cannot hold down even a sip of water.  Am getting worried that 7 week old baby won't have enough milk, he has fed normally today but am I going to run out?  I am extremely dehydrated.  Any advice really appreciated.  x ???

You poor poor thing. Yuk.
Mother nature has had to deal with this exact problem for thousands of years. Eventually your supply may be affected but it may not be for a while yet. Carry on drinking as you may be keeping some down. Keep nursing and pay close attention to your LO's cues and wet nappies. I would say however that if another 24 hours go by you should think about contacting your doctor or if you suddenly feel a lot worse. Dehydration can be dangerous for you as well as your milk supply. Try and drink one of those rehydrating solutions. They taste gross but they do help you retain the fluid. I would say don't use any milk supplements at this stage as this will only decrease your supply further.
Is there someone who can be with you?

How are you feeling today?  I can relate - when my lo was about 2.5 months old, I had a stomach bug - it's terrible!! You just can't manage them because you're so weak and I worried sick because I knew I was dehydrated.  The good thing is that they usually don't last long (hopefully you're over yours by now!) and babies survive.  I don't know about you, too, but I found that my milk would let down when I threw up too!  Such a waste!!  >:(

That happened to me when dd was about 4 weeks - I still managed to nurse - I think she got enough ... I went to weigh her the following week after the incident (lasted about 2 days) and she had gained weight.  I think if your baby was not getting enough ... he will let you know by crying a lot.
