Questions about tropical fruits for 6-9 mo
« on: April 19, 2006, 18:50:23 pm »
Hello everyone! Everyone knows that we can give apples, bananas and pears to our lo's. These are standard fruits that almost everyone in the world know about. However, I am living in an area where not only are these and other familiar fruits available, but many tropical fruits are available also.  I would like my lo to taste these wonderful fruits but I don't know at what age to begin these fruits since they are sometimes less common to the Western World in large supply. I will list various fruits that i enjoy and I would like for anyone who knows to list at what age I can begin  giving these fruits to lo. My lo is 6 mo but has been on solids for a month now. We've tried almost everything that a 6mo old can try so far. Please give me your ideas.

Tropical fruits: Are these ok for lo? 6-9 mo
Passion fruit
Loquat
Annona
Star Fruit
Persimmon
Sabre/cactus fruit
Pitaya/Dragon fruit
Guava
Lychee
Mulberry
Pomegranate

Also these legumes:
chick peas
kidney beans
black eyed peas
lentils

Thanks and i look forward to your replies:)

Joanne

Beware of guavas...I'm filipino and guavas are plentiful in the Philippines.  They can cause your lo to be constipated.  Pomegranates have seeds and must be sucked then spit out.  I found somethin about mangoes online and it said they may be ok at 8-10 mos.  HAve You heard of feeder bags?? they're safer than just giving a piece of fruit by themselves.  You put the fruit in the mesh feeder bag and give it to ur lo.  HTH  and let us know if you find out more on those tropical fruits!!
Blessed beyond measure.

Wow, how neat to have so many tasty foods available! Honestly, I'm stumped. I can't find any resources for the fruits you listed. If nobody else has any info, the only ones you might need to be wary of are citrus or very acidic fruits. They're often very hard on an immature digestive system.

The guidelines I've seen for legumes suggest introducing at 9 mo.

Well I don't know about fresh ones but here in the US, Gerber sells Jars of Guava, Papaya and Mango in the stage 2 and my little one loves them, especially the Mango.

Oh I'm sure they sell those fruits in the US.  I use to live there! I guess it could be different for everyone.  It would make a diff if they were in jars instead of fresh.  Ok I was just looking them up online and alot of sites ayy they AID CONSTIPATION!!! SHOCK!!!   Why is it that we'd always be warned in the P.I. not to eat too much or else!!!  Too much of anything is bad come to think of it. ;)

Thanks for the replies:) I will be careful with guavas thanks and will also also look into getting a feeder bag. I think that I wll try the Annona fruit. The texture is like a pear but it has a slight pineapple flavour also but not accidic. Yea I eat pomegranates all the time but I thought perhaps there was a way that I could give them to lo (like perhaps the seeds could be strained or blended or something) :P. I give my lo papya now and he loves it and we don't have problems with constipation because of it. Papaya is a fruit that is easy on the stomach and the enzymes are many times used in meat tenderizers.
