Question about amounts
« on: April 19, 2006, 19:50:28 pm »
I have started to introduce a small amount of soilds to DS. I give him a bit of his milk feed and then half way through offer some baby rice (1tsp rice mixed with his formula). Over the last few days he has shown that he is really enjoying it so I've been giving him a little bit more each time. I only offer a small amount though as I want to make sure he takes his milk too. I've also added about 1tsp of pureed fruit to the rice. When is it ok to offer a bit more of the rice and not worry if he doesnt take the rest of the milk? I am only doing this at 11am feed at the moment. All other feeds are purely milk. Am I working towards this 11am feed being mostly solids but topped off with milk or do I only do that at 6 months? Hope that makes sense.

Cath
I would strongly suggest letting him finish his bottle of milk, waiting 30 - 60mins then give the rice, especially when you are just starting out. The fruit amount sounds fine....

DS went through a stage where he knew he was getting food after his milk and he went of his milk, I still refused even then to give him anything but milk first.

Breastmilk or formula should be your LO's main source of nutrition until he's closer to 1 yr old, so solids really should be replacing that for awhile. Your best bet for estimating how much solids to offer is to keep an eye on his milk intake. If he's nursing, make sure he's still interested and nursing as long as he used to. If he's bottle fed, he should be taking around 32 ounces of formula per day. However you decide to structure his feeds is up to you!

Totally agree with all the responses solids shouldn't replace any milk feeds whether it be breast or bottle. Milk intake should remain the same until to at least around 9/10months when it starts to drop.

Thanks for that. I'll try to give it him a couple of hours after the bottle. Its just that I've been mixing it with the formula from his bottle so should I make it up before I warm his bottle and just keep the mix in the fridge until I give it to him later?

I think it often depends on the baby and his weight etc, my son is the same age as your little one and has 4 8oz bottles a day and 2 good meals ( a jar size at each meal) prob because he was nearly 11ibs born and now over 20ibs.
