Did I do W2S right?
« on: April 22, 2006, 15:47:00 pm »
Hi there,

Last night I  set my alarm for 1 am to try w2s to prevent my LO's definite habitual wakings at 2 and 3 am. I did what I've done for the naps and gently stroked her cheek until she moved and stretched (she's a tummy sleeper). However, it didn't work. I will try again tonight but am wondering....

1. Do I need to do a little more than what I do for naps? Do I jostle her more as she is in a deeper sleep?

2. She has been waking at 2 and 3 for many weeks now so do you think it will take longer for her to break this habit?

3. Lastly, will the 1 am w2s prevent only the 2 am waking or could this reset the whole schedule and I can eliminate both wakings?

Not giving up, will try again tonight,  but need a little more info before I do!
Thanks,
Leah  :)

Sounds to me like you did it right. As long as she moves you have stirred her enough to enter a new sleep cycle. It is recommended that you do it for 3 nights anyway so give it a bit more chance to work, especially if it has been a long habit. DS had a habit waking at 3 and 5am for a while and I decided to do w2s for the 3am first and then tackle the 5am one but I found that by doing the 3 it also stopped the 5 so you might get lucky and it do both. Good luck!

What Brightside said and also I have realized the hard way that yes, if they are in a very deep sleep you may have to jostle them harder. i just did w2s for my 5 month old 20 minutes ago and he was in such a deep sleep I had to practically pick him up and shake him.

you did things perfictly :)
work on one waking at a time. To start W2S will only stop the one waking. At the second waking try Pat/Shush, when the first waking is eliminated and you no longer have to do W2S start it on the second waking. Your doing great so far. It takes time for the effects to fully kick in.

Thank you ladies!
I haven't had a chance to try again. She is now, after weeks of waking at the same time, waking at 1 and then 3.  ::)
I'll wait to see if a new pattern is created and try out your suggestions!
Thanks so much for replying!  ;D
