4 hours between feeds
« on: April 22, 2006, 19:38:56 pm »
New member, so not sure if we're supposed to post the same message in more than 1 board, but having just posted in the 'EASY' forum, I noticed the breastfeeding one and thought maybe the question was more appropriate here. Anyway, I'll post the same question again!:
I just bought a copy of the Baby Whisperer today in the hope of getting my 3 week old into more of a structured routine. The thing is, the book clearly states to go three hours between feeds until around 4 months, but my son is already going at least 4 hours. He was a big baby (9lb 9oz) and right from the start has gone at least 4 hours between feeds. He normally goes between 4 and 5 hours, and sometimes at night will go 6 or 7 hours. Whether awake or asleep, he shows no sign of being hungry until at least 4 hours have passed. The health visitor and midwives have assured us that this is fine and he is getting enough to eat/drink - he is filling plenty of nappies and is putting on weight. My question is should I put him straight on the 4-hour EASY routine or should I try and get him into the pattern of feeding every 3 hours?

My son was the same and it was actually a bit of a problem. The feeds were fine every four hours but the naps were all over the place. He ate like a 4 month old but slept like a 1 month old. So if he fed every three hours he could have had his 1.5 hour naps, then feed and then 1.5 hours activity. But because of the 4 hour feeds it got really chaotic. But he didn't mind at all, never cried for three months unless he was hungy...

I would just make sure you're prepared to be a bit flexible if you sense a growth spurt coming on. They only last a few days but you may need to vary your schedule a little or use some EAEASY so your milk supply is maintained. Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less). It can vary a lot however.

If your LO is happy I would mess with a good thing, if he is content and as you say has plently of wet nappies then I hope things continue well for you. Be flexable give 4hours a try, see what works best for you and your LO.
