how long without a poop is constipated?
« on: April 23, 2006, 09:36:40 am »
I think the subject title kind of says it all...

I'm just wondering if my dd is constipated, we've been on solids for a couple weeks. She was going every day and now hasn't for 2 days. When should I concider it time to take action?  Anyone got any miracle cures?

babies can go a very long time without a poop (the longest in my circle of friends was i think almost 2- 3 weeks and the midwives reassured her it was fine)  the key distinction is not TIME between poops but whether the lo is in distress / TRYING to poop. if they are bearing down / trying to poop and either no success or obvious trouble and/or produce hard stone-like poops then you are dealing with constipation. if baby is happy enough then it is normal - all babies poop to their own schedule  :P

if it is since the introduction of any particular solids just keep in mind that some are constipating and might need you to compensate with extra fluids and/or foods that counter them.   constipating foods are often remembered with the term BRAT - bananas, rice, apples and toast/breads and the ones to counter it are the Ps - pears, prunes, and i am not sure of the others:  peaches and plums  :-\  it could be the rice cereal if you have started with that as many babies find that hard to handle - you could mix in pears wth it and some breastmilk or formula for extra fluids.  HTH

it's not just how long without a poop , it's also the consistency of the poop when they eventually go . it's not unusual for a baby to go a few days without when they start solids . watch with baby rice though as this can be very constipating for some babies . if when she poops it's still soft and she doesn't struggle this is fine , but if she is straining a lot and only having little hard droppings then i would say this is constipation . there are many threads on this topic with great foods to relieve constipation . prunes and prune juice is a good one

Thanks, I was wondering about prunes, thought they might be a bit extreme.  The situation has resolved itself now but thanks for the information, good for future reference!
