How many night feeds should a 4 m have?
« on: April 23, 2006, 13:49:31 pm »
I don't want to eliminate all the feedings if he needs them. He sleeps at 7, wakes at 2, 4:30, and sometimes 5:30.Strictly to eat.
I have started the dilution process like Leah Mom mentioned in another thread. he ate breakfast this morning instead of waiting. But I will keep a feeding if he needs it.
BTW, LO is a big guy. 18 lbs already.

I take it you are bottle feeding, right? At that age Ella was waking usually 1x night, very rarely 2. At that age she was 16.5 pounds so quite large as well.I think they say at that age 1-2 nightfeedings are normal. My pediatrician suggested trying some cereal as she met all the criteria for eating and was very interested in our foods. The usual recommendation is 6 months for solids, but it really helped with Ella (doesn't help with all babies and can sometimes make things worse).

What time is he/she going to bed and are you dreamfeeding or clusterfeeding? These may also make a difference in how many times the baby gets up at night (usually less as they go to bed with more milk in tummy).

i would say one to two night feedings would definately be normal for a lo that age. it does look like lo is 'cluster feeding' through the wee hrs of the morning though. if lo can make it 7pm to 2am i tend to think he can do longer stretches in the early am than 1 and 2 hrs. kwim?? have you tried settling without feeding? how long does he sleep when you do that? or does he settle at all? have you tried a df? and def if he isn't eating well at the first morning feeding (wake up feeding) then he prob doesn't need ALL the night feedings.

the dilution process works very well, although i haven't heard of anyone using it with a lo that young as of yet - you do know your lo, and if he is that big i would tend to think it is ok...:)...my lo was 18lbs at 8months  :o :o :o :o

He goes to sleep at 7, and we dreamfeed at 10:00. He still gets up at 2:00.

I am just not sure what normal is.

We were just at the doc on Friday and I asked if my 17.5 lb, 6MO DD should be going through the night without a feed.  He said that she is getting close to that point but not there yet.  I think I could actually push the issue and get rid of the early AM feed and have a DF around 10pm and breakfast around 7am, but I'm good with one wake-up.

It's all personal.  Just like every one of us is unique, so are our babies!

Hi there, great to read someone elses baby is also waking twice a night at 4 month of age. Our little man is doing exactly what yours is with one or two wakings depending on how long he makes it with the first stretch!8pm til 2 then again 5.30 or 8pm til 3 or 4 am then through til 7 am. It is so frustrating hearing about other babies sleeping through the night from early ages so I feel a little more reassured now. He really seems to be hungry the first time but I get the feeling that he should make it through til the morning with one feed. He often seems to wake with wind but when he wakes a second time before the morning he always goes to sleep again after a feed. I am normally so tired I have not had the energy very often to just try and settle him without a feed but I think I should try that for the second waking. After all, he makes it 4-5 hours consistently during the day.
I am sure you are doing a fantastic job. One day soon they will be big and we will miss this time!!!!

my dd is 4 mo and i only feed her once a night, but she was waking up twice up until last week.

she gets a d/f at 10 or 10.30pm and then she would wake up around 1-1.30am am and in the 'olden days' i'd have fed her! lol, but now i shush her gently back to sleep. then she'll wake up anytime between 3am and 4am and i'll feed her then.

now she just wakes up once a night (still usually between 3 or 4am).

we've just moved to 3.5hr easy and hope to move to 4hr next week (she was 3 weeks early so is still a little bit behind with the length of her activity time). i found that this helped her night wakings. i always b/f her for 30 minutes at each feed now. obviously she doesn't feed constantly for the whole time but she likes to have a rest and then go back to nursing. before i'd have put her down to play if there was a 5 minute pause in her feeding.

i still only feed her on one side, but then at bed time she usually has her normal feed at 5.30 and then some activity and her bath is at about 6.30pm, then i used to let her nurse off the same boob again before bed. now i give her the other breast and let her have a proper feed before i put her into her cot. i always make sure she has a good wind and about 10 minutes before i put her down so she doesn't associate the feed too much with sleep  ;)

anyway, that's what's working for us just now, but don't be too hard on your lo if they wake up more than once. try not to compare them with other babies. they are unique!  ;D
