Is this enough solids???
« on: April 23, 2006, 17:42:48 pm »
My lo is a few days shy of 10 months.
His last check at the ped he had dropped in wt.  6 months he was 18 lbs (90th percentlie) as was his length and head measurements.  At 9 months he was 20lbs 2 oz at 50%.  The Dr wants to recheck his wt in 1 month.  He has started to crawl and creep over the last few months and they said that this might be normal.  My husband and I are both tall and lean so maybe he will be too.

I just don't know if I am giving him enough.  He will eat solids till the cows come home and won't stop however, the more solids the less of his bottles he will take so I have experimented and found a happy medium now b/w solids and bottle.  The only other obstacle now is that for the last 3 days he hasn't been interested in his 3 or 7pm bottle and has started waking earlier (4 and 5 this morning 330) when he used to wake at 545 or 6 even 630 am.

Questions:

Is he getting too much solids or not enough?
Why is he waking earlier??  Again, not enough bottle?

This is his schedule on a normal day

6 am wake and BF
7-730 solids (6 tbsp cereal and 4 tbsp fruit)
9-915 nap 1-1.5hrs
11-1130 bottle EBM 5-7 oz (usually 6)
12-1230 lunch (4tbsp veg, 3tbsp cereal, 2tbsp meat, 3 tbsp fruit)
130 nap 1-1.5hrs
330 bottle EBM 4oz (now 1-1.5oz)
430 supper (4 tbsp veg, 2 tbsp cereal, 2tbsp meat, 3 tbsp fruit)
700-715 bottle (4 oz at most)

Please help!!

To me me it looks fine apart from the 4.30 supper? Maybe you can try a wee bit less solids???.

Solids also have less calories in them than milk does, but they are more filling... So his calorie intake will be less the more solids he eats.

Is it also possible that he is very tired at 7 and can't really eat any more? 1.30 - 7 is quite a long time to stay awake for a 10 month old ??? Maybe try the 2nd nap a wee bit later and his appetite may be bigger?

Hi Sabine,

The amount of solids you are giving sounds great, however have you though of eliminating the 3.30pm feed since he isn't taking much and moving the 11/11.30am feed forward to after lunch and just before nap time. You will probably find he will take more at the bedtime bottle. So try something like this:

6 am wake and BF
7-730 solids (6 tbsp cereal and 4 tbsp fruit)
9-915 nap 1-1.5hrs
12 lunch (4tbsp veg, 3tbsp cereal, 2tbsp meat, 3 tbsp fruit)
1 bottle EBM 7 oz
130 nap 1-1.5hrs
430 supper (4 tbsp veg, 2 tbsp cereal, 2tbsp meat, 3 tbsp fruit)
700-715 bottle 7 oz

I agree, you might try less solids at supper so he'll take more of that bedtime bottle. If it's any consolation, Tyler dropped from the 80th percentile in weight to the 50th at about the same age, right after he became mobile. His height stayed in the same percentile. His weight has stayed in the 50th percentile ever since (he's 2 now) and it's just the way he's going to be built. DH and I are both lean, so it's no surprise. So your LO's weight drop may just be the way he's going to be!

thanks so much for the advice ;D ;D

Tylers Mommy--last pm dropped the cereal and he took 6oz of EBM so I will stick with this unfortunately he woke up again at 330 :-[

Natasha--The schedule looks good--the only problem is he sometimes can't make it until noon for his lunch.  And I am worried b/c last time I tried solids before milk his total intake dropped--he was full from solids didn't want the milk.  Could I do bottle at noon and lunch at one instead??
