what if he doesn't like a new food?
« on: April 24, 2006, 15:00:07 pm »
hi everyone. My ds liked squash (a lot) and has had carrots and sweet potatoes. Now i am starting bananas and he doesn't seem to like them. do i switch to something else and try again later? do i go back to something he's already had? do i keep trying?

i tried giving him some last night and he ate some, but did a sour type look then cried to be done. He did eat about 1/2 jar though.  With the others he just ate them up. I tried some cereal this morning with just a spoonfull of bananas and he refused that too.

Any ideas and suggestiuons would be great. Thanks

Hello,
I found the same thing with the fruits too! Ella loved all the veggies you mentioned to start, then I started with fruit and I got this face as if it was sour. I tasted the banana, peach, pear etc in a jar and I found it sour too! Try them, they have ascorbic acid in them to preserve them (lemon juice) thus they do taste sour a little and I am sure to there fresh new palates even more sour than we taste them. What I did was mash a normal banana and she LOVED it, she also now eats in a mesh feeder. Other than that, I just made my own pears and she seems to like them. I recently found an organic brand called Earth's Best that doesn't use ascorbic acid and she loves the apple/banana together, as well as plan apple. Maybe that is what your lo is experiencing or it just may be a face he likes to make to new tastes (since he ate half a jar)? Good luck with most taste testing!

It can take a lo up to 20 tries to truly decide if they like something or not. Keep trying, maybe every other day or so. Have you tried mixing it with something else that she likes? I have often found jarred things, especially fruits, to be sour tasting as well, so the idea of mashing a real one might make a difference. My DS loves banana and especially loves it in a mesh feeder.

Thanks ladies.  We tried pears, and he ate the whole jar.

Question on the mesh feeder.  how long should I give him jarred food before letting him use it?  or do I just have to try that fruit in the jar and rule out allergies before giving it to him?

Sorry to steal your post....I try the mesh feeder last night with my 8.5 mo DS and he just looked at it..."what am i supposed to do with this?". What is a good age range? And what foods seem to work best? TIA>

not a problem at all.  my ds was teething and ha\dn't started many solids yet, so i put frozen bm in it to help sooth him.  many people do fruits/veggies like bananas, melon, cooked carrots, etc.  did you try putting something in it and putting the mesh part in his mouth?

i'm just wondering when i can start using it with food.

I didn't start with the mesh feeder until DS was showing interest in feeding himself. Plus he takes a paci and night and the feeder sort of looks like one, so I saw some recognition in his face when he saw it. He knew just what to do with it!  ;D

my ds loves to feed himself with the spoon already.  He took the mesh feeder with frozen bm with no problem at all.  I'm just concerned with the texture of the food as well as foods we haven't tried

The mesh will filter out stuff like seeds and strings that the lo can't handle so I wouldn't worry too much.
