out of the house and solids?
« on: April 24, 2006, 20:55:34 pm »
Hello,
We just started solids 3 days agoo (woo hoo!) and dd LOVES it; we are planning on going on a trip on Thursday and as i was going over a mental list in my head of things to pack suddenly thought - oh wow - how the heck do you do solids while out?  even if not a big trip....like just out of the house?  is there a certain way to take them along?  this may be a verrrry rudimentary question that i should know the answer to - but i breastfeed and have only taken a bottle with me one time and have never taken food along for dd.
so would you just mix your food and take it along with you?  right now i mix cereal with breast milk...
would like to hear from other mommies on how you take your solids along with you if not already in a jar. (tupperware??)
appreciate it!

I have some containers for dd's food (nothing but glorified tupperware).  I would take a separate container of breast milk and keep it cold until you are ready to use it.  Put the cereal flakes in the container, premeasured.  Mix it when ready.  Don't forget to put 'spoon' on the list  ;D  It's been forgotten.  Perhaps a permanent one in the diaper bag would be helpful.
When I need to bring other foods, I put each meal in a separate container and keep them cold.

Rachel,
Yes that helps quite a bit - thank you!  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some sort of protocol I was totally missing...lol!  Appreciate the quick response....and the spoon has been added to the diaper bag! ;D
One last question - do you just use one of those cold packs that you put in the freezer to keep everything cool?
Many thanks!

Yes, one of those freezer things... an insulated bag helps too.

I always had a packet of baby cereal in my bag just in case (Gerber makes individual packets, you can buy a box of them) and a spoon. I could always mix it with water in a pinch if needed. Sometimes I toted jars, but since I made almost all of his food, I'd usually put it in several small covered containers or in the compartments of a covered divided toddler plate. I bought a little insulated lunch bag, I'd toss a freezer pack in there, and we'd be on our way.

I also make my own food. I use the "ice tray" method. Does anyone know how I would take it to go? Do I thaw it first? How long will it keep in the cooler? I am using store bought food now, but I think Gage is liking it much better ::)

..oooh gage's mom - so glad you jumped on....i want to start making some of scarlett's food as well using the ice tray method...so am interested in that feedback...
also - wanted to say THANK YOU!  i used your tip regarding the towels under the sheets as a roadblock for "active" sleepers ;D...and it has worked like a charm!!!  yippeee!  many thanks...we took scarlett out of the swaddle and she was flipping over on her tummy and unable to get back and it was getting verrrrry tiring....the towels under the sheet nipped in the bud...anyway - way off topic, but was happy to see you post so i could thank you!!

We too use the ice tray method.  We take out dd's food the night before and place in separate containers (for each meal).  Before leaving I pop the appropriate container into the bag and go.  Depending on how long it will be until you need it and what amenities you have available to you, you may want to make sure it is completly defrosted first.  As long as you keep the food cold, it will be ok.

We did the ice cube tray method as well. We'd usually put the cubes in the fridge the night before, or if I forgot, I'd defrost them just a bit in the microwave before we left. I'd only nuke them until they started to get soft and they'd be melted by mealtime.

One small thing that helped a LOT...after Tyler's intro to solids, we gradually got him used to eating cold food. Eventually he preferred his food and bottles straight out of the fridge. It was a lifesaver when we were out and about because it meant that we didn't have to search for a way to warm his food. Just a thought!

Stacy- that's the benefit of getting them used to cold foods...much easier! The first food Tyler ate was cereal and breastmilk, warmed. After he got the hang of it and moved on to fruits and veggies, we offered everything at room temp, then gradually made it colder.

I bought a travel bottle warmer. It has a flexible band that you can put around the food container. Usually I connect it to the cigarrete lighter of my car and by the time I have arrived to my destination, the food is warm.

What I found very useful too is to have a long, little "box" where you can store my LO's spoons. In this was I am sure they are always clean and not mixed with the stuff that is in my handbag.

ok - it's official, i am the worst solids feeding mommy ever i think - i haven't warmed up her cereal!  just mixed it with breastmilk from the fridge that i let stand at room temp for about 15 minutes and then gave it to her...!  she loved it - but i never even thought to warm it....!  yikes!  but she also loves cold water...however when i start adding more food and less breast milk i will probably start warming it a bit.
and I really did try to read about this stuff before starting!!  too much info must have short circuited my allergy hazy brain :P

If you let the breastmilk sit for 15 minutes does the fat mix well with the milk?  Just out of the frige it is usually all stuck to the sides of the bottle.  I usually warm the milk under water, then mix with food, but would rather not if I don't need to.  Is the food out of the fridge too, or is that room temp?  Giving cold or room temp food seems easier and way more portable!

When I started my dd on solids and cereal I warmed it.  Then when I thought she was teething I gave it to her cool to help sooth her gums and she seemed to prefer it that way.  I make my formula for the day in the morning and put it in the fridge and I just mix that with her cereal and she eats it just fine.  Also I only give half a container of food at one feeding so it is either room temp or cold from the fridge and she likes that also.  So don't worry about heating things unless they prefer it  ;)
