learned to scream
« on: April 25, 2006, 16:18:04 pm »
My LO has started a lovely new phase.  He has recently learned to yell.  He has this annoying little habbit of using this new loud grunt/scream sound when he wants attention or wants to be picked up.  Very embarrassing in public.  Is this just a phase because he found his volume control?  Should I try to ignore?  Tough to do - it is really loud and abnoxious.  Sometimes I can't tell if he actually is upset or if he is just practicing the sound??

Anyone else go through this?

YES!!!  And unfortunately more than once.  With Katie is was just a matter of her realizing that she could make a new sound and practicing it over and over....and over....and over  ::)  Basically as long as he seems happy otherwise, try not to pay a whole lot of attention to it and he'll get bored of it sooner or later (keep your fingers crossed that it's sooner rather than later :) )

Yes, once they find that they have a volume knob they get a kick out of that and have to practice like with everything else.  ::)  It's a phase - don't pay any attention to it and it will pass.

Thank you for this!  My DD is 6MO and just started this to.  It's a very annoying and very loud "aaanngghh" kind of grunt.  She uses her whole body and grabs whatever is at hand and will extend her legs.  If she could jump when she does it, I'm sure she would.

I can't wait for this to pass.   ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)

OMG Gage's Mom, Colin is doing the fake coughing too. It's a game to him - he does it and you're supposed to mimic it. He thinks it's the funniest thing ever. When we were in the grocery store last weekend he kept doing it to people and getting frustrated when they didn't get it.  ;D  ::)  I just hope that me or DH doesn't get sick or Colin will never stop laughing!

Seeking attention isn't being naughty, babies cn't really be naughty at that age. Attention is a NEED, just like food and love. I always respond and he doesn't do it all the time. If he does, he wants some company and that's only fair, isn't it? I like company a lot, too and I yell for it!

So it is okay to cough back? I do sometimes, but I am so afraid of accidental parenting. Also, I cant help but feel somewhat responsible for Gage's new found voice because I mimic him often to encourage conversation (that is what I read anyway).

I cough back at Katie and then we both start laughing.  I figure it promotes communication and don't mind the fake cough at all.  It's SO much better than the screaming and the angry grunting!

We cough back here now too - imitate whatever you want.  If he's making other noises in addition to the screaming, mimic the ones that you'd like to hear again and just ignore the screaming.  Or just respond in a very calm tone when he screams...."Oh, I see" -- when it doesn't get that good of a reaction from you he'll eventually move on to something else.  It's just his way of learning what he can do with his voice and how to control it.

I'm with Erin. I cough back all the time, it's fun and it's obvious that he understands it, KWIM? He knows that it's a communication game. And the delight in his face is priceless. Other noises he does I ignore, if they're not for the same sort of reason.

oh yes, we cough back too. and if theron sneezes, we'll do a fake sneeze. it helped when he had a cold and was all miserable, and sneezing and coughing would upset him. so we started imitating him, and now he smiles everytime he sneezes!
