Drinking his bottle in "phases"
« on: April 25, 2006, 18:58:49 pm »
My 10 month old ds has been drinking his bottle in "phases" for about the past 3 weeks. At first I thought he needed a higher number teat. We went from the Avent #3 to #4, and he took it well. But he still drinks it in 2-3 "phases". So I'm wondering if this is normal, or if someone else has gone through this. He's not ill or teething, I'm just sutmped.

TIA

I forgot to add that I give him his bottle, about 1 -1.5 hours after solids  ;)

hi

What do you mean been by drinking in phases? Could it be he isn't hungry at the particular times you are giving him milk  :-\

I used to have to offer DD's last bottle of the day in two phases - before bath and then after bath. This was the only way I could get more into her. Is there a reason for offering in phases? Remember at this age too their formula intake will decrease because of the added solids.

Well, basically he seems to desperate for his bottle and he takes it very well. Then it seems like someone threw a switch and he squirms and kicks and creams and pushes the bottle away. Then about 20 mins later he starts searching for his bottle like crazy, and the whole process starts over again. He takes his 8 oz, but in an hour period.

Any thoughts?

Hey, Bec.....I didnt' see your post till now....but do you think it could be something due to the Heat?  You have mentioned several times that it is awfully hot there now....and if you drink milk and get hot, it can sour your stomach......just a thought.

Hmmm, I didn't know about the heat souring milk. I ahve offered it cold just to cool him off, but he really doesn't like it, and the weird thing is that he eventually drinks all of it. If it were souring wouldn't he not want more? Ugh, I'm so confused and between phases 1 and 2 as we speak.  ::)

No....not that the milk is getting hot and souring.  Hhmm...maybe this is just me, but if I drink milk and I get too hot, it will sour ON my stomach and give me a stomach ache.  Does that make sense?  Just a theory. :)

No prob

6:30 a.m. -- wake up
7:00 a.m. -- 6 oz of milk
8:30 a.m. -- remaining 2 oz of milk with cereal and maybe some toast
9:00 - 9:30 -- nap
11:00 -- wake
11:30 - lunch, 2 oz protein, 2 oz veggies and 1 oz carbs
1:00 -- 6 to 4 oz of milk
2:00 -- remaining milk
2:30 -- nap
4:00 -- wake
4:15 -- 4:30 -- snack, 3 oz of fruit or jell-o, sometimes a cookie or 1/2 rice cake
5:30 -- dinner, 4 oz soup or cereal
6:30 -- 6 to 4 oz of milk
7:00 -- bath
7:15 -- remaining milk
7:30 -- bed

In the morning he drinks his milk the best, though I have seen that if I offere it rght away he won't drink any. So I wait about 30 mins and then he drinks it well. I'm making his bottle with 8 oz, which is what the ped suggested. Like I said before, I've tried cold, lukewarm and warm milk and he does the same thing no matter what. At first I thought teething, but no so. In fact, I noticed 3 new teeth yesterday amd he showed no signs. Same fussiness with the bottle, no waking, no drooling ( he's always been this way with teeth...thank god! ). I am just as stumped as you are  :-\

Hi Beca,

Hope you are well - do you think that perhaps Santi is just very thirsty and that he is drinking his milk in drips and drabs to quench his thirst?

Have you tried to offer him any juice or water in between?  Just a thought as you do mention that it is so hot out there.

Tom Tom drinks juice in between his food and bottles and takes his bottles really well when he is not teething  :-\

Hi Paula, alls well here, thank goodness.

How are you and Tom Tom? Good I hope.

He does the same thing with juice, milk, water in a bottle, sippy cup  or big boy cup.  :-\

I really don't know what to do! It's starting to really worry me. Tonight he just drank an oz and there was NO WAY of getting him to drink more! He eventually fell asleep without it. So now I may be in for a long night ahead of me. And we'll be out of town for the weekend.....I really really hope it doesn't make the problem worse.

Thanks so much for your concern  :-*

Hi Beca,

All is well with us thanks - excpet for Teeth - the story of my lif.

Maybe Santi's teeth are botheringfhim - perhaps his gums are sore or maybe just a bit tender.  I know that Tom Tom refuses his bottles when his gums are bothering him - at the moment I am battling to get 12 oz down him.

Let us know how you get on.

Paula

Hi Rebeca,

What did the doctor's say?

Did he give you any idea why Santi would be doing this with his bottles?
