When are these foods OK?
« on: April 26, 2006, 02:19:20 am »
My 9 1/2 month old daughter is on finger food and breast milk only (won't let me feed her anything mushy anymore).  I'd like to introduce more vegetables, like zucchini and corn, but I'm not sure how to prepare the zucchini and I have heard corn was a common allergen.  I also worry about it being a choking hazard.  She is a really good self-sufficient eater, and the more I can introduce to her the better.  Neither my family or dh's family have any food allergy problems.

Also, when is it OK to try strawberries?

Thanks in advance!

Now, these are just my thoughts on the matter - not a medical view!

My ds has always loved corn. For the first few months, puree cooked corn with a blender. I read somewhere that babies can't digest the corn husks, so it can give them stomach pains if they eat it whole when they are very young.

I would say zucchini should be cut into matchstick shapes, and steam-cooked, so it's nice and soft.

Not sure about strawberries. the seeds would be a problem...

lucky you, having a wee one that can feed herself. My 13mo has NEVER put anything in his mouth, including toys, so can't feed himself at all!

My little one loves corn and has been having it since six months mushed and for about 2 months now as finger food; it is a great cupboard standby, try it and see. Strawberries are a bit tricker because they can cause allergies, I have then cooked from six months ( the cooking ie 5 minute steam) takes away thew allergy element and given them raw ( same has gone for all the berries) since about 10 months, try one watch out for a rteaction etc....  With courgettes, I make Little fritters for her held together with a egg and some flour, fab!!!!!!!!!

I heard that strawberries are okay at about 8 months. I've been too nervous to try because they are high for reactions but I do know that lots of mom's here have tried about 8 mos. HTH. I just started my LO on Kiwi  and she is 7.5mos. It's related to teh strawberry isn't it :)
