Level 1 nipple vs. level 2 nipple
« on: April 26, 2006, 14:10:06 pm »
My son is 4.5 months old - In Tracy's book she suggests a level 2 or second-stage nipple for babies older than 3 months .....  I use Dr. Browns bottles and noticed that level 2 nipples came with the pack of bottles but I didn't know what they were for.  My question is what is the benefit of using level 2 nipples vs. the level 1 nipples?  I give me son ready-to-use formula and he drinks between 4 and 6 oz at each feed.

Thansk!

I don't use Dr Brown bottle, however saying that , nipple size differences in all bottle manufacturers mean the higher the number the faster the teat flow.

You should switch to #2 when #1 is too slow and you feel your LO is getting bored. You will know #2 is too fast when you use it if LO gags and spits the milk out.

i also use Dr. Brown's bottle and i changed the nipple to level 2 'cause DS was getting bored 'cause the milk formula wasn't coming fast enough, and then i changed to level 3 'cause of the same thing, so i guess it depends on how you see your LO, but you coudl try to change the nipple for like 3 days, if on the third day your LO still spits too much milk then go back to the slower level. hope this helps.

I wouldn't go by the age on the teat package. My DD was still using level 2 Dr. Brown nipples at 12 months. She never showed a problem with them, so I never spent the money to buy level 3. Only change if you feel your LO need too, like the previous posters said.  :)

i'm so glad i found this thread!  my lo is 2 months and using #1 (avent) nipples.  i've noticed this week that she is dozing on her bottles which she doesn't usually do.  does this mean she is ready to move on?  is that what you mean by "bored"?

Well yeah, my DS used to either get sleepy or he just lost interest in the bottle when the flow wasn't fast enough. And i totally agree with Leah's mum, don't go by the age on the package, when i changed from level 2 (it said it was for babys 4MO) to level 3 (babys 6MO) my DS was almost 4MO so, deffinetly don't go by the age on the package. Hope this helps

the box says the #2s are for 1mos +  which is pretty vague.  then the #3s are supposed to be for 3 mos +.  i'm a little hesitant b/c she's still taking the bottle rather well.  it's taking her a little longer to feed but she's still draining the bottle.  thanks for your help, it's definitely given me something to think about.

If she is still taking the bottle well with no problems, I wouldn't change nipples. Even if the "age" on the package says too.
