14 mo waking up screaming/crying after going to bed
« on: April 28, 2006, 01:35:46 am »
My lo is either teething some major teeth or being very affected by finally walking. SOMETHING is bothering him. He doesn't have a fever so I don't think he's sick or has an ear infection, though I do hear him with a slight congestion. Has anyone ever heard of maybe their little legs cramping during the night after they first start to walk?

DS wakes up several times during the night, sometimes every hour. He wakes up crying and is inconsolable. I try giving him the purple candy-flavored tylenol (which he normally loves) or offering milk or water. Nothing distracts him unless I take him out of the room and show him the nightlight in the bathroom. He's not nec afraid of the dark because even if I leave his little small lamp on in his room, he continues to cry.  Maybe he's having bad dreams due to being overtired from walking?

This is day 2 of this constant waking and crying (dh is actually trying to get him back to sleep now - we've been trying for 45 min now). I'm thinking things should settle down in a day or so.  Has anyone else experienced this around this age/milestone??

is it possible that he has an ear infection?  my dd did the exact same thing about a month ago and we finally took her to the dr and she had a double ear infection.  once the antibiotics kicked in, she was fine.

Ouch. Can ear infections clear up on their own? Or do you absolutely need antibiotics to get rid of it?

My 14m dd has had so many ear infections, I can tell she's getting one by the way she cries. Usually a day or so before the Doctor actually see's it. We're waiting for tubes to be put in. I hated the thought of her being on so many drugs but when you think of the pain their in (tylenol usually doesn't cut it), plus the sleep their loosing, antibiotics seem to be the answer.

I've read some Dr's view on letting the ear infection clear up on its own but I've never waited around long enough to see. I've also heard the eardrum could burst/pop if left untreated.

We've also tried cold medication(runny nose, stuffy nose) and nose spray (both recommended by our Ear specialist). Sometimes if you can clear up all the passages, fluid caught in behind the eardrum can drain down the tubes and might releave the pain. Maybe an option before antibiotics.

Best of Luck

He doesn't seem to have the symptoms of an ear infection - no fever, never really touches his ear - so I don't know. He does stuff his hands in his mouth all the time but that's usually more of a sign of teething.  I guess I'll call his doctor this morning to ask his opinion.

An ear infection does go away by itself but if his doctor recommended meds so it'll go away quicker, I would definitely give him some. I just don't want to give him antibiotics if the problem is not an ear infection.  :(

Does he have his first year molars?

No... I was thinking these may be coming in because his hands always go to the side of the mouth but his lower lateral incisors haven't come in yet. Still, that doesn't mean the molars aren't coming in. His teeth seem to be coming in their own order (his top teeth came in from right to left, starting with the lateral incisors).

Sounds like it could be the molars--they can take ages to come in.  Why don't you try some pain meds before bedtime to see if that helps?

I give him some baby Tylenol as well as Chamomile teething pills a little while before bedtime.  :-\

I just put him down for a nap. He fussed a bit (per usual) but, overall, went down fairly easy. He usually wakes up well, too, so I'm just thinking that it's the milestones of the molars and walking that are bothering his deep nighttime sleep.  I'll wait it out for a couple more days and, if he's still waking up after the weekend, I'll take him to his doc.

Thank you all for your advice!!!   :) :) :)

Tell me more about these Chomomile teething pills. Do they work and where do you find them?

For teething, I've only tried Orajel, baby Tylenol, and Hylands teething tablets. I'm not sure if the Hylands teething tablets work, but I only use them in the daytime now. I had a weird experience with them in the middle of the night when it seemed to cause DD to be super hyper and awake, so I am afraid to try them again at night.

SO sorry I didn't get to this sooner. The chamomile teething pills are also made by Hylands. They are like the teething pills you have but they contain only 1 ingredient, the chamomile. We use the 30x version. I can't say for sure if they work or not... maybe a bit. And they definitely haven't made ds hyper.  HTH!!

DS is sleeping better again, except now he's got diaper rash. It doesn't seem to be a food rash... not sure what the reason is. I'm doing some research on what is causing it so I can prevent it. In the meantime, poor little guy! I feel so bad for him because he's in pain when I'm cleaning him up.  :'(

Thanks, good to know. I'm not sure stores in my area carry them. I never noticed them before at Walgreens, Target, etc. Will have to take a closer look though.

I've been fortunate enough to avoid diaper rash, I think it is because we always put a dab of diaper rash ointment on her at every diaper change. We don't use just any ointment, it has to have 40% zinc oxide on it. That's what my childbirth class instructer told us to get. Most diaper rash ointments have 10% or less zinc oxide in it.

He never had diaper rash until after his 1st birthday, so I was sort of surprised. The first round of diaper rash was definitely food related, so I stopped giving him oranges and tomatoes. This time, I think it's illness related.

If his tushy had even a hint of pink on it, I would put ointment on it. I think I'll go back to doing that. Thanks for the suggestion on the ointment. I'll make sure it has enough zinc oxide.   :) :) :)
