Hi Kelly, love the new pic of Zander----he is so cute ;D

Well I'm confused---Noah is now refusing the am catnap, yet 1 long nap in the middle of the day doesn't seem to be enough.  we are also still haveing some nights where I can hear him awake for 20 or more min off and on in the night, or he wakes early.  He's definately not sleeping a solid 11hrs at night.

He seems to be able to handle 5.5hrs in the am before 2hr nap but can't handle the 5-5.5hrs before bed.  Putting him to bed early doesn't really work either as he rarely adds the extra sleep on to his night.

so I think for now I will try to force him to sleep in the morning in the stroller or the car for 10-15min ----just to see him take a long nap closer to 12 rather then 11:30 and then bed 6:45pm.

I'm hopeing these early morning and night wakings will settle.  he rarely cries at either but it just bugs me that he is awake!!

I think that sounds like a good plan Deborah - just make sure the car nap doesn't come too late in the morning otherwise he might struggle to go off for his main nap.

If he doesn't cry when he wakes in the morning, how do you hear he's awake?  Can you hear him through the walls or do you still have a monitor on?!

well I'm a super light sleeper and a bit of an insomniac.  we also live in a small old bungalow---so I can hear his every wake and move. I do kind of wish I had a monitor to turn off...I do wear ear plugs which help a bit.  Noah moves alot when he wakes and kicks his bed etc...

today Noah took a morning nap... but that was 4hrs after waking, he woke at 5:15am this am, out of crib at 6:30 and took a nap at 9:20, he went right to sleep and I woke him at 9:50am

I think I will aim for this:
wake 6am
nap 10 15min
lunch 11:30
nap 12-2
bed 6:30, asleep by 6:45pm or so

I'll let you know how we get on...

hey Stacy, no we DON'T have a monitor...just a smallish house.

I always leave Noah to do as he wishes in the night and the early morning, and I always have.  I hate early mornings..... he'll play/fuss do whatever and then go back to sleep if he has had less then 10hrs of sleep.   If he's had 10hrs, then more often then not he'll just just play for 45min and then start complaining and calling out for me. I won't get him up before 6:15am---even if it means going in there and reassuring and leaving.

I wish he wouldn't wake at all at night.... it drives me crazy, I have a very hard time going back to sleep afterwards.

ps. Isn't this snow insane......I'm off to go and shovel once Noah settles to sleep here.

News flash and more than likely premature celebration  ::) :P

Nello still asleep ---2 hours and 10 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used 5 hours and 1/2 hour awake time and he was asleep at 12:40 and it now 2:50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited, I had to share.  :)  We are on week 6 of the transition.  Took 2 weeks for his poo's to change (sorry TMI!) but is did screw things up.  We have had 4hr. 4.5 5.0, 6.0 awake time, loads of food and milk topper, no milk, W2S, nothing worked.  Usually doing 1.5 hours.  11.5-12 at night, but then the overtired monster would creep in by about day 5-aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgh.  Have had 45 min naps too-horrible.

Ooops, he's up, I hear him, my good boy!  Got to run, but just wanted to share and say---EARLY TO BED HELPS SO MUCH.  6:45-7:00pm.

okay--need some tweaking---

30 min am nap and 12:30 pm nap was working liek a charm for 2 mo.  Now it's taking him almost an hour (and sometiems some help) to fall asleep for PM nap.  Do I need to shorten or eliminate AM nap, or push PM nap back to 1 or 1:30?

Current routine:

6:30/7 wake
9:30 nap (30 min)
12 lunch
12:30 nap (1:30-2)
6:45/7 bed
Thanks!
Sarah

Aisling that is great....

Sarah.....now didn't you have 5/5:30am wakings before?
now its 6:30/7am? how did you do it?...pls send it my way.
really I think if you are getting 11hr nights, 2hr day is probably good...so 30min am===1hr30pm, try cutting it back to 20min--so less of a real nap-and maybe you'll get a 2hr nap starting at 12:30 or so.

Hi!  I'm new to this thread, and not sure we're ready for 1 nap, but that's what I'm wondering about.

DS will be 1 next week.  He has always been a terrible napper, and we have struggled with short naps for months.  But they are getting shorter and worse.  Today he had 2-30 minute naps.  I have played with A time and doesn't seem to make a difference.  Occasionally, he'll have a 1h nap, or on a jackpot day a 1h 20 min nap, but these are pretty rare, and hard to predict.

He has always been prone to getting overtired too so I am scared to make it worse.

Here is what our day is approximately:

Wake between 6:30 and 7:00
3h A time
30 min nap
3.25-3.5h A time
30 min nap
3h A time
Bedtime (often 6:00 which is earlier than I'd like).  Sometimes if he wakes at 6:20 or 6:30 am, he is ready for bed by 5:30 which I refuse to do so we do a car-ride catnap but I'm tired of having to do this.

If I thought he'd have a 2h nap in the afternoon I'd be ready to try to switch him, but what do I do if he still has his 30 min nap...then I'm stuck.

He has 12-12.5h nights.  I think I need to take an hour of that night (preferably from the evening, not the morning) and tack it on his nap but I don't know how.

Any advice?  Thanks so much!

Sarah - you need to start cutting the am nap back.  I'd cut it back by 10 minutes to 20 minutes (either at 9.30 or 9.40 depending how easily he falls asleep at 9.30) and keep the pm nap at 12.30.  Let us know how that goes!

M and Ns Mom - at almost 12 months your LO probably still needs some sleep during the morning to make it through to a long pm nap.  If you're going to try for a short am, long pm scenario then most start with this routine:

am nap  9.30-10.00
pm nap 12.30-2.30 (we hope!)

You should find there's a window straight after lunch when your LO is feeling very satisfied and is likely to sleep longer, also their energy levels naturally take a dip at this time of day.  If you leave the pm nap too late they get a second wind!

Thanks Deborah & Kelly.  I'll try 20 min in Am tomorrow.  I'll keep you posted.

Okay, Deborah, I am soooo glad you asked about the 5/5:30 wake.  Are you ready for this???  We TOTALLY screwed up his routine and when we put him back on it, he started sleeping till 6:30/7.  I am NOT kidding!  He had been doing early wakes for 2 months, then (much to my dismay) we had to take a short trip (by plane) for a potential new job for DH (househunting, dinner with the company reps, etc).  So, we got in at 9 pm on a Thurs, he didn't get to bed till after 9 on Fri.  7 on Sat and then again 8:40 in Sun.  All of those days he slept till 6:30/7 AM from being so overtired (oh, not much for naps either)  That was all mid-to-late-Jan, and he has been sleeping till 6:30/7 ever since!  I'm not saying I recommend it, but I guess sometimes you need to really throw it all out the window, and it really worked for us! such an unexpected surprise!  He often still wakes briefly at 5 or 5:30, but puts himself back to sleep quick as a wink and doesn't wake up till at least 6:30.  Amazing, isn't it?!

Lol Sarah, Zander had a late night at Christmas which meant he didn't wake until almost 8 the next day and I grabbed the bull by the horns and moved his whole routine on - he's been going to bed at 7.30 (which DH loves!) and waking at 7.30/8 ever since!  Sometimes these things work out great  ;D

wow Sarah...totally against the rules and it worked! thats great...
For the first few weeks after cutting back the am nap, he was sleeping til 6am, now it seems to be back and forth again...
I am just counting the days till the time change

everyone I know..... (all non BW) keep telling me to put him to bed later consistantly for a few nights in a row.
There have been a few nights that he has been to bed as late as 7:45pm and we had 4:30am wakings...so I've never done it again.

I know what you mean though, there have been a few days where Noah has had crappy naps and gone to bed quite tired at the regular time, I thought I'd be in for a really bad night, but instead I didn't here a peep for 11.5hrs.

this afternoon he is tired, he was in his crib from 12:30-2:30 but only slept 1-2:10pm, he has been rubbing his eyes ever since...

Sarah....what time is bedtime now for you guys....?

Question that has probably been asked many times before, sorry:

We seem to have gone to one nap a day, but I don't know what time to put her down.  I pick up my oldest from school at 11:30.  Do I feed Savannah a snack before we go and put her down as soon as we get back (11:45) or do I feed all three together and then do nap at 12:30?  Saturday she went down at 12:30 and slept almost 3 hours but it hasn't happened since.

 :)
