I'm guessing the #$*O&@"$(*74 hammering woke him up.  :P

Rofl!

Its just the first one nap day after a month or so of preparation - I got sick of waking him out of a dead sleep after 20m of sleeping.  So today I just said, well whatever!  Lol  tomorrow we may not get so lucky.  This stuff sure is tough huh?

Good Luck all

Anyone care to share a quick crash course in switching from 2-1 naps? (the 111 pages on this thread is a bit of a daunting task to attempt to tackle).  Or perhaps shed some light on where in this thread I could find some quick help info??

btw-  dd just turned one, but if she has 2 naps- won't go to bed until 11.  This has not been very good for mommy.  If you want me post routine I will- otherwise, just point me in the right direction on where to find some info!

thanks!  :):)

Bethann, here are some links that might help:

Most people on here are trying to shorten the am nap in hopes of getting a longer pm nap and eventually getting rid of the am nap.

Just when things start going well again he gets an ear infection! His first!! Last night was a nightmare. He was sobbing at 4pm, and I thought it was b/c he needed a nap but couldn't take it. But the sobbing was unusually hard. We went to bed at 6, and fell asleep right away (which scared me a little - OT anyone?). But he woke up 2 hours later just SCREAMING! I've never heard him cry like that! 1.5 hours later, he still wouldn't calm down, so we took him to Urgent Care, where they found the ear infection. He didn't fall asleep until 12:45 am. Argh. At least he slept thru until 8:30 at that point. Let's hope the antibiotics and pain reliever keep things a little bit normal tonight!

Poor little dude!  My 3 1/2 year old had an ear infection lately, she was in SO much pain she vomited repeatedly so that tells you how much it can hurt!  The antibiotics usually make a difference very quickly, and Motrin is a wonder drug for this so keep that in mind...

Hope you can get back on track soon!  :)

Poor Owen! dd has never had an ear infection but I had one recently for the first time ever, and Oh. My. God. I thought I was going to die! No wonder these little dudes get so poorly with it.
We had the most perfect ever nap day yesterday- dd woke at 7.30am (12.5 hours sleep- unheard of in this house!) and she napped from 12 noon to 2pm without a peep (clever mummy took her swimming at 11am which tires her out  ;)) and then she went to bed at 6.30pm- out like a light.
Mind you this morning she pooed herself awake at 5.55am so it's back to 2 naps today....
Man this transition is fun............

Hey everyone.  We are in the midst of this too.

We have been down the road of short AM nap, long PM nap, but even that short AM nap was now pushing the PM nap too late for bedtime.

So far, she is going OK (we think).  It is officially only day 2 today, but we have had quite a few one naps leading up to today (wouldn't sleep at daycare ;)) but is now home with me every day.  Unfortunately, last night (after day one - which was not planned but was all we could get) DH had a workmate coming over, so I could meet the wife, who is new to town - they have a 12 mo and a almost 3 year old, and they arrived before bedtime. DD is spirited, noway she would go to bed with the kids here playing, so she went to bed at 9:30.  Slept fine til normal wakeup at 6:30.  She was very overtired this afternoon, in bed at 5:26pm.  But that is fine, she hasn't stirred which she does if too overtired.  We have to get her up at 6 in the morning as we are going away for a couple days (which is going to mess her up bigtime, then when we come home, more messed up as sleeping in our room due to guests >:( >:( >:(, plus she doesn't sleep well when anything in her life changes like that).

So, good luck to you all, and wish me luck for at least the next week too ;D :-*

How tired do your los get making it to nap time and bedtime?  Zara is pretty wrecked by the time we get there....but like I said, I can't fit two naps in any more....is this normal?

on the days she goes to nursery I have her in bed as soon after 6 as possible, as she will only have 1 nap there and unfortunately it's usually less than an hour, as she's too nosey to sleep  ::). Her usual wake time is around 6.15-6.30am and she still wakes at usual time so she can catch up with that hour early to bed. She survives the day ok, but the carers say she gets clingy and a bit tearful from about 4.30 onwards- I think she is just wrecked by this point. She livens up after I pick her up at 5.15ish but crashes the minute her head hit the mattress!
On the days she is at home with me I am managing mostly to still get 2 naps in- even if the am one is only 15- 20 minutes it definitely makes a difference! I daren't let her sleep longer than 30 mins in the morning as one day she had 45 mins and refused her pm nap.  ::)

well, I think it's time to change things again,

Noah was doing great sleeping 8-7am (in bed at 7:30pm) with a 30min nap at 10 and a 90min nap at 2pm.

but is now back to waking early again...
usually falling asleep by 8, but then waking by 6:30...out of crib 7/7:15am.

I'm just wondering if it is  time to cut the morning nap right back?
I'm totally confused about the amount of A time in the morning when cutting the am nap to 15/20min,

should I offer it at the same time (3hrs after wake), later (3hrs 15min after wake) or earlier?

I'm thinking...
wake 7 (hopefully)
nap in crib for 10, asleep by 10:15 and up at 10:30,
in crib for 12:30, sleep 1-3?

hi Deb
we had a few early wakings again lately and I've found the best cure for Sophie is to push that morning nap a bit later. She easily goes 3.5hrs from first waking to first nap now. If she goes down after 3 hrs, that's when she refuses to nap, I guess cos she's not tired. Obviously as the nap is later I have to shorten it so it doesn't push the pm nap later. Actually it brings the pm nap slightly earlier as I put her down after about 3h40 A time and she goes straight to sleep. (When she was having 30-40 mins nap she was doing 4 hrs A time). This means that there is now longer A time before bed, which also helps stop early wakings.
I would offer that nap for Noah say 15 mins later and see how he does. We are currently doing:
6.30 awake
10 nap 20ish mins
2pm nap 90 mins
7pm bed
This is fun, isn't it?  ::)

Rina: Lots of luck to you guys!! That's an awful lot of disruptions to look forward to. I hope she does even better than you expect!

Kathryn: Your routine helps tons.  I get confused about when to offer the PM nap when I shorten the AM nap. But it makes sense that it will be a bit earlier.

Yesterday, Owen did 1 nap from 11:30-1:45.  Nice long one! but, not quite long enough, since it meant a 6 pm bedtime - and even that was pushing it a bit. He fell right to sleep, before I could even get him in his crib. I wasn't surprised when he woke up 1.5 hours later. I think he thought it was a nap.  ::) After trying to get him to settle down for an hour and a half, I gave up and let him have "A" time - but it was just watching TV in our dark family room. He roamed a bit, but mostly I let him lay his head on my shoulder or lap. AT 10 I gave him a bottle and put him in his crib awake. He put himself to sleep, like a good boy!  :D And slept until 8:45 this morning! Today, since we don't have any builders here, I'm going to keep that AM nap short so we can definitely have a nice long PM nap. It makes SUCH a difference! I'm just grateful he slept thru the night last night. It would have been nice to not have a 10 pm bedtime, but I'll take what I can get at this point.  ::)
