depo...I have the same concerns with the early bedtime.  It is driving me batty.  Its beautiful out and my daughter is on transition to no naps so she's in bed by 6:30, 7:00 the latest :(  I am so hoping that after vacation I can work on making it later.

I agree with everyone hating the really early bedtime.  We do as early as 6:00 some nights   >:( which isn't as big a deal when we are home as we can still be in the backyard with DD, but if we are out at a barbecue or something it is REALLY a pain!  I have noticed that DS doesn't want to go to bed when we have been playing outside and cries a lot more if we have to go in from outside to go to bed.  He just loves playing outside (actually, I am on my laptop in the backyard now while he is playing around me  ;D).  DD is out with DH.

Stacy, when you say he "asks" for an earlier nap, just curious what he does...or is he talking enough to ask verbally?

Jenifer - If the nap is pushing her bedtime too late, I would actually be tempted to push her long morning nap instead. I think Natasha did that with her lo at 11.5 months where even a short morning nap wasn't really producing a long pm nap ( from memory) & she pushed the morning nap instead so her lo transitioed at something like 12months. Worth giving it a go!  :)

I don't think I understand what you mean .. do you mean just keep DD up (say, to 11:30am) and then try for one long nap?  If I let her nap longer than 30 minutes in the am she will simply not nap in the pm.  So, if I go for a longer nap in the am I can pretty much guarantee a no-nap afternoon.

I know DD really liked her am nap .. its always been her good one.  I wonder if I push it will she get overtired in the am and then not nap well at all?  She's saying up until a little past 10:30am on her own now (playing around in her crib) .. would it really be that bad (meaning, her getting overtired and causing problems) if I try to stretch it another hour (keep it low key)?

well last night was:

asleep by 6:40pm
awake and fussing/crying off and on from 12:45-2am, not enough for me to go in and he settled on his own
coughing at 3am (not sure he was awake)
coughing at 5am (not sure he was awake)
woke at 7:15am or so

so yes I was awake from 1am until 5:30am (wide awake)

I've actually layed him down at 10:15,because he was yawning all the way home from gymboree, but as of 10:40-he's not sleeping---at least hes had some quiet time. (enough that I thought he was sleeping)
so I'll go get him I guess at 10:45 and then nap at 12ish

PLEASE EVERYONE PRAY FOR A 2HR NAP!

praying for you deb....
Sophie coughs in her sleep a lot at the moment (dr thinks she has either hayfever or asthma)- the other night she coughed so much I went in to get her up and she was fast asleep but coughing so hard her body was shaking,  :( So he was probably still asleep, even though you weren't  ::)
Am praying for a 2hr nap for you-
today we had a bad nap day for the first time in weeks- Sophie fell asleep in the car at 10.30 am which is really unlike her (especially as she woke at 6.45am which is late for her), slept for 30 mins so of course didn't want another nap. Managed to get an hour out of her this afternoon which was an unexpected bonus- I think she is coming down with something and that's why she's so tired today- I have tonsillitis so she's probably caught that off me, booo  :( Can't believe we had a 2 nap day after a couple of months now on 1 nap! Threw the whole routine out the window and she's been reeeeaally grumpy this afternoon. Putting her to bed in a minute, phew, then I can relax!

I have a quick question.  Are your lo's grouchy after waking them from nap #1?

This morning I woke ds after 20 mins and he was a crank until his next nap.  I hope to let him nap for 30 mins once we get this established, but we have plans for later this afternoon, I'm afraid.  He's overtired right now and we're trying to play catch up, so I'm sure that doesn't help at all.

Deb, I'll be praying for you and a nice lloonngg nap for Noah, and the same for Matthew and myself!

thanks for the prayers
well it seems as though I should of persisted with that nap this am, maybe the phone ringing kept him awake
he was cranky and rubbing his eyes 30mins later at 11:15, by then he was eating lunch,
got him in to bed at 11:40---rubbing his eyes, now he's quietly talking and moaning, fussing on and off. oh great, now he is laughing.

help me if he is awake at 1pm, we have a baby shower this afternoon at 3, and I won't be able to fit another nap in.

Hello Ladies
Well its upon us, the dreaded 2-1 nap switch.  Except at first I thought "whats all the fuss about, this is a piece of cake" I couldn't quite believe it was happening so easily and I now know I shouldn't of believed it at all.  OK so previously we were on this routine
6.30wake
9.30 nap
10.45 wake
2.30nap
3.30-4.00 wake bedtime no later than 3hrs after, 3.15 if she had napped longer in pm.

Then DD started to take the odd day with just one nap at about 12.30pm and slept till 3-3.15pm and went down to bed by 7-71.5pm no problems.  She then started to refuse her am nap on a lot of days and at the same time jumped on the overtired train and so her 1naps came down in a hurry to 1.3hrs & 1.15hrs and wake up was getting earlier as well 5.30am  :o.  So having read some of the previous posts I got her back onto 2 naps.  We now have a routine something like this, but its not really working, I think bedtime is just way too close to wake up from pm nap.
6am wake (were still on the overtired train and mornings are still too early)
10am nap
11am wake her up
3pm nap
4pm wake her up
7pm bedtime is taking between 40Min's - 1hr to get her to sleep  so is once again overtired and morning wake ups stay early  ::)

We have had quite a lot go on in the meantime none of which has helped matters.  We have transitioned from her hammock to a cot as she could sit up in hammock making it unsafe.  She is teething like crazy, 2 are through but she is still teething :( and she has had diarrhea and sickness & still has the bum end going on, shes one crabby little bugger at the minute >:(

So my question is what the hell do I do  ???  someone please tell me cos my brain is just not in the right place at the moment to even begin to try to figure this out on my own  :-\

Thank you ladies in advance for any advice you can give, it's seriously needed.

Thanks Stacy, thats exactly what I meant. Let her have a long morning nap & push it every say 3-4 days in 15min increments & do an early bedtime until she is taking her nap more or less near midday.

Deb - ~~~~~2hr nap vibes coming your way~~~~~~ (thats if I am not too late, lol)

Be back to post late but gotta go & take the girls out for a walk in this freezing weather at 7:06am in the morning (I am blessed with 6am risers  ::))

Rina you wouldn't believe it... these kids (well Isabella really more than Jasmine) are willing to go for a walk when its raining... you're in Australia so you know how cold its been here. Absolutely freezing. When we get back home, my nose feels like its going to drop off & Isabella is crying 9/10 times because we have to leave the park. I mean i hate the cold but anything to make them happy but there's nothing to do in the park becuase everything is so bloody wet!!! If not from the rain from the freezing weather, the dew & the ice! Yes, there was ice on the grass the other day.... On the way home, she is jumping on the puddles and I am thinking.... OMG child, are you NOT cold???!!!??? Thankfully I can still strap Jasmine in the pram but Isabella wants to walk home & she will stop for everything (which even further delays the process of getting home). As soon as we get home, its take all clothes off, change into something warm and a warm cup of Milo! Thats the only thing I can use sometimes to bribe her to go back home (although thats very un-UP to bribe.... but sometimes it has to be done  :P :-\)

While I am here...I have been reading on and off and am sorry to hear so many still struggling.

We were having about 1.5 hr naps, then we went away for 10 days, and she 40 min napped when she felt like it (some days one, some days 3) mostly slept through though despite short nights from dinners out and all that.

Came home, and she went straight back to one nap (we thought we would have to transition all over again).  Since we have been home, she has taken naps anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hrs, nights are 10-11 hrs depending how long she takes to fall asleep and how early she wakes.  She is teething molars, the only NW we get are when pain relief wears off.  Her short nap of 1.5 was when we gave her her nap 1-1.5 hrs early as we had a birthday party to go to, we did bed a bit earlier that night, but she took longer to fall asleep and seemed fine.  I would say that we have made it. ;D

Layla - that is so funny.  My mornings are spent watching baby einstein - a practice we started in preparation for me not being able to give her my full attention first thing once the baby comes LOL. But same problem here, wants to be outside rain/hail or shine.  Thankfully it isn't as cold here as it is down there!    And don't think of that warm milo as a bribe - it is a natural part of warming up after getting cold for any Australian family ;)

New mum - I would do something like this:
10am - morning nap
10:45 - wake from nap
1:45-2pm - afternoon nap
3:15-3:30 - wake from nap
7pm - bedtime (she shouldn't be fighting it cauuse there is 3+hrs between the pm nap and bedtime & hopefully should sleep in later in the morning).

You'r lo is about the same age as mine and we have a similar routine other than her wake up is at 6ish.

Try that & see if it helps
Layla
