Grace my guess would be Lucas was overtired.  Poor little man.

PJ ended up sleeping 2h5 min and was very tired all afternoon ??  how odd.  So he was in bed by 645.  I guess he is trying to catch up?  Still stuffed up but I think yesterday might have been the peak of the cold.  i hope so, anyway.

Good eve everyone.  Having a glass of wine over here.......any one care to join me?

stacy - we had the same naps today, except they were at home

30 minutes in the am and 45 min in the afternoon.  I'm glad I'm not alone and that all babies go through this.  I just can't wait for it to end.  ::)

I think Zander falling asleep in the morning yesterday was a fluke!  Mum had him today and I told her to cuddle him with a dummy watching his light show at 9.40 and if he fell asleep before 10 he could take 15 minutes.  He didn't sleep but of course he was relaxed so a good thing and then he went until 12.50 for his nap and mum woke him up at 3.10  ;D

wow Kelly, Zander is a super star.  Must be all that meat.  LOL HA HAHA

PJ had a horrible night - how stupid - but the other cat decided to knock the clock of DH's bedstand.  I mean, how odd?  just reach up and pushed it off.  Well it was VERY loud and it was at 430am.  PJ was up.  TILL 6AM!!!!!!!!! then only slept til 7.  I put him down for is nap at 1146.  He was screaming for joy when I put him down - literally - for a few minutes then yawned and fell asleep.  I hope that means he will sleep well.  we are at 1hour15 mi right now.  I am praying my little man will catch up a little.

The painters haven't showed up today.  I wonder if this is at all normal?  Not that we are in a hurry but how annoying!!

Meg

***Update*** I am in need of some serious support here.  I am devastated by these naps.  Another short one today and he is so sleep deprived, I am sure that is it.  Usually when he is this tired he WILL take a nice long nap.  He used to do 2 1hour 20min naps and now he is doing 1 if I am lucky.  I am not sure what to do here.  there is no way my sleepy boy can stay up longer than 5 hours till nap time and especially on a day like today where he was up for 1.5 hours in the middle of the night.  I can't put him down any earlier.  And what drives me nuts is the days he does sleep well.  that just gives me hope that he *can* do it - I just can't figure out the formula.  It sucks.  And this waking up grumpy crap is killing me.

Thanks for letting me vent once again.

Hi Meg,
I totally feel your pain and am going to pm you more about what we did with ours when this happened at that magical "week 4, caught a cold" stage.  AND, we have cats too.

Zander is amazing!  Can you have him send sleep vibes to our shorter sleepers?

Mine was definitely overtired -- I napped him in the car yesterday afternoon at 4:00 after running errands, and then still did early bedtime and he slept more than 11 hours, which is sheer bliss for us.  Hopefully DH will have a good day with him today.

Stacy, you basically summarized what I wrote Meg in more detail...didn't want to get too long on this board, but if anyone wants the details of how we tweaked the schedule during my DS's sickness derailing of his transition, just let me know!

Welcome katriona!  Everyone on this board is so helpful with the transition.  Somewhere in this thread are the signs that are helpful to look for, including dropping of a nap and early wakeups.  I think it helps to be sure they're really ready before you leap in so that the transition is smoother.

I don't know if this will help anybody but our current routine (depending on the weather) is as follows;

If the weather is good I take Zander for a walk for at least an hour at 9.30 which was his old morning nap time.  He doesn't go to sleep but if he did I'd have to wake him after 15 minutes because if he has anymore he won't take another nap until dinner time.

If the weather is bad or we can't go out for some reason I take him to his room or our room at 9.40 and give him his bedtime water cup (or dummy if he throws it!) and we cuddle and watch his light show until 10.  If he goes to sleep before 10 I let him have 15 minutes otherwise at 10 we get up and carry on with out morning and at least he's had a rest.  Sometimes I sit him on my lap and put Baby Einstein on for 20 minutes instead, especially if he's woken late and I know there's no chance he will fall asleep but it's important for him to stop moving and chill out.

If Zander sleeps in the morning lunch is at 12 and nap is at 12.45 or thereabouts.

If he doesn't (most days) lunch is at 11.45 if he's happy and any time after 11 if he seems to be getting really tired BUT if he's had a good rest during the morning this gives him enough energy to last until 11.45 usually.  With no morning nap his afternoon nap is at 12/12.30 (aiming for 12.30 and eventually 1 by the time he's around 18 months).

Bedtime has been at 6.45 for quite a while but I'm moving it on by 5 minutes every few days as he's now consistently sleeping well overnight and for his nap and the early bedtime was only ever temporary to stop him getting overtired during the transition.

This sounds perfect I know but it doesn't always work out - I'd say it does 6 days out of 7 so I know I can't complain.

I know you joked about him taking 2 hours after lunch due to all the meat Meg but I swear it is a big reason - I'm not going to try to preach that one any longer but it works!!  ;)

Thanks Kelly -- we are big fans of meat also!

Kelly (and/or everyone),
Here's something I've been wondering as we do this transition.  What do you think we should do about this situation?  LO wakes sometime between 6 and 6:30 and needs to go down for nap by noon at the latest (although often it's more like 11:30/11:45).  His naps are only 1.5 right now (and may stay that way I'm thinking) so his wake up is between 1 and 1;30, which sometimes leaves a long time to get back to his previous bedtime of 7:00.  We've had success with putting him down between 6:30 and 6:45, but I'm hoping the nap and bedtime can be a little later.  He's 16 months old so should I just sit tight until he's older or start trying to tweak the schedule after he's gone a few  weeks on the single nap successfully?

kelly - thanks - I do wonder if I were able to keep pj up a tad later if he would sleep longer.  he used to respond well to that.  But we are clearly in an overtired state.  Also I totally agree with the protein.  I always think of those things when thinking of PJ's lunch, and dinner for that matter!  I just do meatless protein at lunch and meat at dinner.  Maybe I should switch around a tad.  Hummmmmmmm  food for thought  LOL

I think the advice I get here is wonderful, I couldnt be doing this without you all.  I just have to think about this a little more and make it work with PJ and his personality and our normal routine.

Lots to think about!

so today we had 3.5 almost 4 hours in the morning and then an hour and 15 minute nap.  Then we had a small catnap in the car around 5.  she's having a little trouble going down, but we'll see what happens with the wake-up in the morning.

I think we have to jump in with both feet and see what happens.  But I know for sure that 4 hours is the longest in the morning without getting overtired.

I appreciate knowing all the routines here and that we are all in the same boat. :D

Hey guys - sorry I've been MIA - I don't do computers, TV, etc on Yom Kippur. So after the napless (well 20 minutes in stroller) day Sunday, she went to sleep at 7pm. We tried to get her to bed at 6:20 or so but she wasn't having any of it. she cried out at 8 for a few seconds but then slept through until 6:15 Monday. Then we let her take her long nap early, from 10:20-12:15 and then she got another 20 minutes in the car around 3:30 on the way to family. She was up until 9pm (!) at IL's house and then slept in car on way home until 9:45 and then right back to bed and she woke at 6:45 today. I'm hoping to just get her to 11:30 if possible and see if she'll take a long nap and catch back up some today.

Yes, Stacy, I meant stick with one nap - sorry about the confusion!

Meg, sorry things have been rough. I guess I'd try to extend his morning A times some, maybe even 15 minutes, and see if that helps. If not, maybe think about two naps again? Did you say he won't even catnap in the car?

Have to dash - will respond more later!

Hi Karen - no he won't cat nap in the car unless we are on a LONG drive - like several hours - he will eventually fall asleep.  I wish that would get us a little 20 min nap, but never happens. It is good for a little down time, though.  Like the stroller.

Well I have thought a lot about this and I am still a little confused.  He is still a tad sick - the worst is over - but his nose is stuffed.  He was asleep at 653 last night and up at 653 this am - with a 1hour wake up from 2-3.  I have no idea why this one happened, other than difficulty with the stuffy nose.  I do give him meds and I am starting to wonder if that is causing the crazy sleep pattern. I am probably not going to give it tonight.

So with 11 hours sleep I would think I could try one nap again, right?  OH man oh man.  And also the fact that he did sleep till just about 7am.  I could do that and get him down pretty early this evey - more like 630 - which is what I was aiming for yesterday but didnt' quite get.

Thanks

The meds could definitely make him wired. Maybe try just a nice vapor bath and baby Vicks rub at naptime and bedtime? If you want to keep trying one nap, I'd not let him sleep more than 11.5 hours at night and then shoot for the nap 5 hours after waking - so if an ideal day for you is 7am waketime, you'd be hoping for a nap from 12-2 and bedtime at 7:30 IMO.
