Ok I think I understand what you're saying.....her A time this AM was 2.5 hours so keep that A time the same but limit her AM nap to 1 hr then her next A time would be 3 hrs then put her down for a nap? Is that what you mean?? I'll give it a try! Thanks!

I am wondering now if I need to seriously consider going back.   PJ has had night wakings of over an hour every night for the past 8 except 1.  His naps have been 1h15 except 2 naps were over 2 hours, but these night wakings are what have me the most concerned.  I know we had an illness, but he is over that and he isn't back to normal.  And we had the painters, but the 2 good naps were while they were here!  so there goes that theory.  We accidentally did 2 naps on Fri - 1 in the car (that was the mistake) and then he went down in the afternoon for a second nap.  They were both 40 min, but in the car he has never slept more than that.  And the idea that he actually slept in the car after only having been in the car 30 minutes is amazing to me.  Oh and DH claims he fell asleep while just 'running to the store' on Sat for a few minutes - until they had to go into the store.  This to me means my kiddo is way over tired.

I am wondering if I should see if I can put him down at 3.5 hours A time tomorrow am and if I get a 1hour 15min nap then a cat nap in the pm.  I don't know what that would do to night time sleep, but it has to be better than this!

Ok, thanks for any thoughts anyone has.

Should I post on the getting back on track>?

Hi ladies

I've missed a couple of days worth of posts as Zander and I both had norovirus (we also passed it onto my sister, newphew, mum and dad  :().  We've continued with our routine of quiet time at 9.30 and the past couple of days Zander has fallen asleep and I've woken him after 15-20 minutes then he's done at least 2 hours at around 12.45.  I'm happy to do this everyday and give him the opportunity for a short snooze at this time - if he takes it or he doesn't it's fine by me!

Kelly you have really figured out Zander, that is great.  I am still trying to figure out PJ.  I think you are onto something with the cuddle nap.  As you can read from my frantic post, PJ has been very erratic.  He was awake at 11pm while I was typing and I was really frazzled.  He stayed awake for about 1h15 min and now is making up the sleep, as he is still sleeping now at 720.  So now I am more confused than ever.  Which makes me think that maybe a quick cuddle snooze at 10 is a good eal for us.  And nap later than 12.

The thing is, I am confused, he is confused.

My original thoughts were to basically do the exact opposite of what you are doing.  try for a longer nap in the am and snooze in the pm, but I might have better success with your plan because it does allow for longer awake times.

See, these little reprieves he gives me - sleeping in and an occasional long nap - that is what confuses me.

Stacy, how is Kaleb?  Is he getting back in the swing?  You also inspire me to hold out.  I do think he will get it, and my timing of the switch wasn't totally wacked......was it?  Yikes.

Kelly sorry to hear you all were sick.  Not fun at all.  Is he able to go back to nursery?  Are you able to stay home from work?

Good day everyone!!

** update** he woke at 8 am and I think he might have another illness.  Snotty nose and little cough.  seems happy enough, though.  great ::)

hi everyone,

i was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on our one nap day and two nap day?

two days ago, theron took one nap (1 hrs 15 mins) and slept 12.5 hours the next night. yesterday he took two naps (50 mins and 45 mins) and only slept 11 hours last night. i'm not sure if this means that one nap a day is better, to increase the nighttime sleep, or if we should still be aiming for two. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

1 nap day was this:
6.30am wake
10.40am nap #1
11.55am wake
4.00pm tried for nap #2, wouldn't go down; in crib
4.45pm walk in stroller
6.30pm bedtime & immediate sleep
7.00am wake

2 nap day was this:
7.00am wake
11.10am nap #1
11.55am wake
4.15pm tried for nap #2
4.30pm asleep
5.15pm awake, very p*ssy, cranky, rubbing eyes for the rest of the evening
7.15pm bedtime
7.40pm asleep  :( :o
6.25am wake

he almost seemed to feel better on the one nap afternoon, and sleep better that night.

i'm planning on just playing every day by ear, and perhaps trying to spot a pattern. our philosophy has been to increase the first A time in an attempt to lengthen the first nap, and eventually have the second nap become a catnap or stroller nap before dropping it in favour of an earlier bedtime (rather than shorten the first to increase the second).

any feedback is much appreciated!

katy

Kelly - hope you and Zander are feeling better! And Meg, hope PJ feels better soon too. Stacy - glad Kaleb is sleeping well with the switch back. We're still mainly on one nap, although yesterday was a two nap day (both in car) since we were out and about all day long. Hope everyone else is doing well!

Katy,

Your philosophy is the same idea as mine.  I have been increasing the A time in the morning and I have been getting wonderful naps out of Jessica. Today and yesterday we did 4 hrs A time in the morning. Yesterday we got 2 hrs and 10 minutes for a nap. I just put her down today...so we will see.  I gave her the chance to take an afternoon 'short' snooze if she liked, but she didn't care for one. So....I put her to bed at 6:00 pm yesterday. We had a wake-up at 4:00 am but she went back until 7:00am  :)
Is that 4 hr A time new for Theron or has he been doing that for a while? If it is new...maybe he will begin to legnthen that nap!!  I think our w2s worked to legnthen it for us. Not sure though. They are such little mysteries!

They are such little mysteries!

They sure are!

Zander didn't want a nap this morning initially but he climbed into my lap at 11am and went to sleep in front of the tv!  I tried to wake him after a short while but he was sooo tired that I put him to bed and he stayed there until 1pm.  I then gave him his lunch and he puked it all up so it seems he's still poorly  :(  I'm now trying to convince him to take a catnap as he really seems tired but he's resisting in his usual style.  I've just taken him in a small cup of warm milk so hopefully that will send him off to sleepy land for a while before dinner time.

Katy - how about you set a time limit for Theron taking an afternoon catnap?  We go for a walk, cuddle or watch Baby Einstein between 9.30 and 10 and if Zander hasn't fallen asleep within that timeframe we carry on with the morning.  If Theron's waking at around 12pm from his long nap how about doing the same between 4.30 and 5 and if he doesn't sleep at least he's relaxing.  He might have woken up really grumpy on your 2 nap day because he'd transitioned into a deep sleep after 40/45 minutes.  I personally would stick to 15-20 minutes.

thanks, shelby! oh, and kelly, i see that you posted too :-)

the 4 hour 10 mins A time is new-ish for us. it's been getting stretched gradually over the past few weeks. i can say that everytime we've added a bit onto it, the naps have been great, then slowly switched back to 45 mins again. maybe theron's waiting for me to get on the bandwagon  ;)

kelly -- great idea about the afternoon timeframe. i'd been thinking about popping him in his stroller and going for a walk at that time; even though it's getting cooler, we've got our stroller snuggli and rainshield just in case. then he can either nap, or just relax. of course, the first day of one nap he was like an energizer bunny, clapping his hands and chattering to himself!

I completely agree with you Stacy.  I have an overtired baby.  It sucks and now we are in the middle of such a storm I sleep/no sleep that I don't know what to do first.

I came on to let out a little anxiety - hope no one minds.  THE PAINTERS ARE RIGHT ON PJ'S ROOM AND MOVING THOSE LADDERS ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!!!!!  they pick up those 36 foot ladders from the ground, pull them back then shift them over and let them SLAM onto the house.  HOLY CRAP!!! I put him down at 1220 and he seems to have made it through the transition, although I would love to know how.  Maybe the painters did w2s for me LOL>

Thanks for letting me get that out.

So I am going to be happy with 1h20min nap today, being that he slept till 8am and then keep putting him down early for bed until he stops waking up.

He just coughed.  The Gods are working against me.  Or are they trying to tell me something?? crap

Hi girls,
Question about W2S.  I can't get Luke to sleep longer than an hour and a half, so I went in and did W2S at the hour mark in the hopes that he'll sleep for 2 hours.  Was that right?
God will give you exactly what you ask Him for, even if it's not in the package you expected it to be in.

That is so funny.  Hopefully he goes back to sleep.  Sometimes I hear Tyler in his crib coughing and he usually is still sleeping or goes back to sleep.

Having 2, 1 hour naps  has made his night 11 hours.  I know this isnt as great as it could be but atleast he isnt over t ired right?
I totally agree.  that 2, 1 hour naps is better than 1, 2 hour nap.  It gives them just enough sleep to get through the day.  That puts Kaleb around 13 hours sleep per day.  Isn't that about average?  We have been working on the 2-1 nap switch since August.  And it took almost 2 months of consistency (well semi-consistent) before Tyler starting sleeping close to 3 hours (sometimes longer  :o :o) for his 1 nap and 11 hours at night.  In fact, I think it was YOU that gave me encouragement that the nap would lenthen eventually.   :) :)

It's funny because prior to the switch, we were thrilled with a 2 hour nap.  Now when he naps for 2 hours, DH and I are like "How come he only slept 2 hours)>

I do still miss the 2 naps a day sometimes though.... :-[ :-[ :-[  Guess you can't have it all.  But that is why I encourage all the mommies to try not to and transition too quickly.  It is tough on the little ones and on the mommies!!!

amystoker-  I took this from another post.  HTH.  W2S never worked for me.   Or at least I was always too chicken to try it.   :-[ :-[

To extend the nap you can try wake to sleep. You go at the 50 min mark if the nap is consistantly 1 hour long (or at the 35 min mark if the consistancy is around 45 mins) and gently rub her back or some kind of cuddle that doesn't wake her fully, you're just looking for a small jolt to help her get past to the next sleep cycle. In the FAQ section of this board there's a complete explanation of this method and there's a sticky about a success story of WTS for naps. You might want to check them out.

He did end up sleeping 1h40 min which is good, but the painters did finally wake him.  What can i do about that?  Poor kid was probably on his way to a really good nap, too. :-\

So anyway we will be doing an early night again.

Wow Judy you do give me hope.  PJ showed all the signs of wanting to do the switch.  Maybe I could have tried a little harder to stick to 2, but I have to admit, he was more miserable with 2 short naps than he is with one and an early bedtime.  kwiM?

Thanks for all the support and encouragment.  I may actually cosider w2s.  I honestly think just opening his door might make him jolt a little.  I just know I tried EVERYTHING when he took short naps before and it didn't work.  I have little faith that it will now.

Ok, must go save PJ's life once again.
