So i thought today dh and the sleep gods had it in for me and dd!

Well, i guess it was actually the TM....at least for nap 2.

Today we had a fine 20min nap and only a 50minute screamfest pm nap!  Yeehaw!

Looks like a 6pm bedtime tonight....only 3hrs 28minutes till then!

Oof Sami, that sounds rough!

Lila did anybody answer your question?  I don't have an answer since I'm clueless too but I'd say if she looks tired close to the 12hr mark, put her down.  Bethany seems to fight bedtime if she gets two naps in, so experiment and tell us how it goes!

Today just worked out nothing like I planned but it worked out well so far, LOL!  We went to playgroup, and I was planning on coming home and giving her milk (she had a big snack at playgroup) and putting her down by 11:30 for a one nap day.  Well, she decided to fall asleep in the car since it was a long drive and was probably asleep for 20mins.  So of course when we get home she will have NOTHING to do with a nap!  At 1:30 my cousin and her dd came to visit and I haven't seen her in a year so of course Bethany wanted to play.  I managed to pry a very hyped-up dd away from the company and got her asleep by 2:30.  Can't believe she made it that long but having the playgroup kids and then my cousin's kid helped I'm sure.  I'm not quite sure when or if I should wake her up from this nap but will just wing it and see what happens.  :D

OliverRowland we JUST discovered dd has entered the realm of sleeping through a nuclear blast stage!  I have been a noise nazi too but we recently were putting in a floor and there was a lot of hammering and she didn't budge.  So I'm trying to let myself relax in the noise department but it's hard when you're so used to walking on pins and needles around the house LOL!

Dang I just jinxed myself.  She just woke up after an hour, it's 3:45.  I'm tempted to just let her be in there to see if she'll fall back asleep but she sounds cranky.  Shoot shoot shoot.  Sami did you send some of those angry sleep gods my way??  ;)

No i believe they are still here in my house, sitting on the couch with the Teething Monster!  Argh.

She's hanging in ....but it hasn't been good.  And i wish she'd stop touching all the sore spots in her mouth!  IM SICK OF CRYING, lol!

Dinner was a write off ...so she now has a massive jug of milk to drink!

I'm hoping to have her sleep from 6pm -630am at least....but i have no idea what that will do to tomorrows nap.

We all just need to hang in there...i wonder if our lo's realize how aggravating this all is???

Isabella's mummy: we always struggled with ew and inconsistency with w/u times.  I rarely changed bedtime unless nap times were a bust.  What has worked well for ds is sticking to a consistent time as much as possible.  I am neurotic about times than i am about noise if you can believe it?! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Lila,
we also always struggles with early wakings. if I was you I would work a 12hr day from what you would consider an acceptable (or reasonable) wake time. so for me it was 6:00am. we aimed for more 11.5hr nights, so with a 6am wake, I aimed for a 6:30 in bed time. with 2hrs in naps.
I wrote it before,
but what worked wonders for us was:
wake 6
nap 9:30-10
nap in crib for 12:30-asleep by 1-slept til 2:30
bed 6:30

I think the thing with your routine today is that the toal awake time is 4hr+3.5+3.75hrs, so over 11hrs of actual awake time, 2hrs 15min naps but only really leaves room for a 10.5hr night (assuming she wakes at 5:30 again). I think what you really want is a little longer night and then you can work at shifting the routine forward. see what time she wakes, but maybe try the 30min am nap and bring the 2nd nap forward and then earlier to bed. this is the lesson I am learning even being on one nap!

thanks Stacy, I do hope he gets a bit more flexible. he is extremely touchy and doesn't need as much sleep as others, which would explain by nap obsession (as you know) over the last 16months. also we really need to look at level of stimulation before bed and he really needs a nice long bedtime rouitine.
nap today was 12:15-2:15 (woke on his own)
bed 7pm, and asleep by 7:15pm,
so I am praying he sleeps until 6:30 at least.

we are thankfully done for teeth until the 2yr molars hit!!!! good luck everyone with the eye teeth!

Another 2 nap day here....eye teeth you say?  Well, we just got one.  That makes 3 molars, 1 incisor and an eye tooth in under a month...

today the "cranky babies go to bed" rule came into play again....and she had NW last night, but she TRIED to sleep, just kept moaning and tossing til more pain relief kicked in, then same story with an early waking, she wanted to sleep and truly tried to.

Barely eating too....like really barely eating and not drinking much milk either!

Eye teeth?  Molars?  We still only have two teeth here and it's been 5 months since the last tooth came in, LOL!

Well, that was a H*LL of a night...I know today was totally too much for her so of course it's my fault, but I hate it to when she gets to this level of OT - NOTHING will get her to sleep and she hits a point where she starts screaming nonstop.  I tried to put her down early at 6:30 but she fought and fought and fought for an hour and then I took a little break with her and played quietly with some toys and when we tried to go back to sleepy land she started the nonstop screaming and kicking, etc.  SO...unfortunately what I have to do when she gets like this is lie down with her, put her feet in between my legs, hold her rump tight against me with one arm, hold her shoulders against me with my other, and press my cheek to her face and just do this hum over and over while she screams bloody murder and then she literally goes from full-force screaming to passed out.  Then I hold her until those sad hiccups stop and plop her in bed.  It was a 2-glass wine night, LOL!  I'm almost just as distraught as she is when she gets to that point.  At least I figured out at one point what makes her go to sleep when she's like this.

So...tomorrow I will be extra diligent but DH and I are going on a date tomorrow night so wish me luck that we can get her in a good frame of mind for the babysitter (who has done her bedtime routine before and I'm comfortable with her, but still...).

Anyway, I realized today why I'm hesitant to do the 20min am nap...I think it gets her a little too OT by the afternoon nap, although I realize today I pushed her way too long, so I'm not ruling it out altogether, I just think she'd do better overall with a long am nap, catnap in the pm and a later bedtime.  I'll get it figured out, I just know it!  ;)

<sigh>
Of course it didn't help that I had to make chicken for 50 people tonight...it's 11pm I'm going to bed!!  ;D

Chicken for 50 people?? Wow!!

Deb - Thanks, I will try that. She woke at 6am today which is acceptable, but still early for us. She has gone down at 9.30, so I will wake at 10 (which I hate doing as she gets so upset) and then get her down again before 1.00. Hopefully then up at 2.30/3ish and asleep for 6/6.30.

OliverRowland - I think I do need to be more consistant. How can I expect her to be if I'm not?! I will try and stick with a 6.30 bed time for a while I think (apart form bad nap days). I kept trying for a little later in the hope she would go back to 7am waking! Plus it's hard when I work to get in and get her to bed ealry. A while ago I found her best bedtime was 6.45, but then that went out of the window!

Kat - re what you were saying about Bethany sleeping more soundly. Did you find that on 1 nap days or all naps? A few of my friends have found that since being on one nap their LOs are harder to wake.

2 of my friends LOs gave up napping at 18 months.....what is that about?!

Hi there,

I have a question...  My lo has been getting up early (5:30, 6:00) for the last week due to teething.  Well, this morning he slept in until 6:45!  Now what do I do with the AM nap?  He's been doing 2x1.25 naps up until today, but I think I need to cut it short since he slept in.

Should I go for 45 mins or 1 hour?

Thanks!
Cindy

Well, I'm not sure, but I think he was awake before I thought he was.  He wanted to go to bed 30 mins before I thought he would.  He's now sound asleep.

Kathryn, I saw your post on the FAQs about 10/11 month naps.  My lo is waking up early, but I attributed it to teething.  He's trying to get his top 2 teeth in, and it's taking forever.  Will time just tell if early wake ups are due to teething or if I need to shorten day sleep?

Kathleen that hour and 15 nap was ot , thats my most hated nap length. Gimme hour and 22 but i HATE hour and 15

If you do a 20 nap, I would get her in bed 90 mins later since shes does seem to have less tolerance for awake times.

Oh, I totally knew I was doing the OT dance yesterday, I just hate it when it gets to that point and I have to pin her down.  :(

So she totally melted down after 2hrs A time this morning so off to bed she went.  I'm just going to let her sleep to catch up.  Naturally right after she falls asleep is the time I needed to go deliver the 50 pieces of chicken (dont' ask...I stupidly volunteered for something) so now I'm scrambling to call to see if anybody can pick them up.  It's 2 mins from my house so of course I'm just tempted to leave her here.  ::)  Dumb I know.  :)

But my latest thought is to do the 5 hrs A in the morning with that 20min nap somewhere in there, she can handle the 5 hrs in the evening just fine.

How's everybody else holding up today?

We're ok here today Kathryn.

Yesterday actually got much worse than i had anticipated.  Avery did great at muddling thru the day on 1hr worth of sleep total...however, when i went to put her to bed (which she totally went willingly)...we had SA rear its ugly head for the 1st time ever!!  Just my luck.

So she screamed for a good 15mins and i kept coming back....then by 615pm she was out.  She slept EXACTLY 12hrs which is totally fine.

I decided we would try to push for one nap, but around 10am the yawning became too much and i decided i would put her down for a quick 15mins.  20mins no longer works here....

Praying for a good second nap today...hoping the Major tstorms they are predicting for nap time don't mess with us.  Don't know if i, or dd, could handle two days of no napping!!

Hope everyone has a great nap day too...and a great napping weekend!

sami

ps Stacy--ive got my fingers crossed too for Kaleb...hope the tstorms don't mess with you guys as well.  In that case, Deb is around Calgary...i think we are in for one heck of an afternoon...especially with the stinky humid weather outside!

Oh Lila I forgot to answer your question...we discovered the sound sleeping back when she was on 2 solid naps a day with shorter night sleep, so don't know if the shorter night had anything to do with it or not.  Her naps she's still likely to wake if anything is noisy at the 40-50min mark, so I'm still a noise nazi during the day, LOL!

Ooh Sami thunderstorms.  Hate 'em now that I'm a Mom, LOL!  :)  Used to love them!
