Marmite

Any thoughts on how old DS can be before I offer marmite? I don't want to for a little while yet, but don't want him to miss out on this important part of his cultural heritage either  ;D

Have a read of this...

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=50206.0

Im not sure how others would feel but I am guessing that a thin film on toast wouldn't harm your LO - but not too much because of the salt content. I hope he likes it. I hate the stuff personally! Lol xx

Hope it helps!!

In Australia we have something similar called Vegemite and DD LOVES it, it is her favourite spread on her sandwich and toast. I start her with this just a few weeks ago.

We started H with it when he was a little over a year old as we were happy that he was getting enough B12 through his formula.  What we did for a finger snack was to put a spoonful in some freshly boiled water and baste into onto some bread, cut into soldiers and bake in the oven, it made a tasty finger food and he used to love them (I'm pretty sure it's an Annabel Karmel recipe).

I would wait until 12 months - for the salt content.

See this: http://www.marmite.com/love/nutrition/salt.html  (don't you just love Google  :))

They say: Health professional advice about the weaning of infants of less than 12 months is to choose products marked as being low in salt as well as avoiding the addition of salt to foods. However, toast "soldiers" spread with a little Marmite are suggested as 'suitable snacks for young children, aged one year or more, along with fruit and vegetables, and dairy foods like yoghurt.'

Don't know if your Marmite is the same as our Marmite, but in my baby recipe book, they use 'mousetraps' as an example of fingerfoods in the 9m+ section (toast with marmite and cheese, grilled).  My well-child nurse also suggested a 'scrape' of marmite on toast for my dd2 (7mo).

I hadn't planned on giving Zander any of my favourite food until he's 1 (I could live off of marmite toast!).  I'm going to make him some of the homemade rusks Gareth suggested though - there's 1/8 of a teaspoon over 2 slices of bread so really a very minute amount.

I have read it is not recommended for under ones due to salt content but I put a thin scraping on toast with some butter and my lo loves it!  Everything in moderation is the key so he doesn't have it everyday or even every week but when he does he eats his toast with gusto!

The weaning book I'm reading (it only goes up to the baby being 1 year old) recommends that marmite and vegemite be off the menu because of its high salt content.  Salt cannot be processed  by a baby's digestive system and causes dehydtration.

Hi ya,

I have an Annabel Karmel book that uses it to make finger foods. She puts a bit in boiling water and then spreads that on some bread and bakes in the oven.

I was just reading a pamphlet thingy about Vegemite (which is pretty much the same as Marmite) and it says "One serving of Vegemite (5g) has about the same amount of salt as a cup of milk or a slice of bread."

In fact, having just compared the labels on the jars of vegemite and marmite in my cupboard, I see they have virtually the same amount of sodium per 100g.  Remember you only use a smear of it.
