Two questions in one...
« on: April 30, 2006, 13:22:27 pm »
DS is 61/2 months and has been on solids for 6 - 8 weeks.  He does great with step 1 and 2 babyfood mixed with cereal.  He has about 1/4 cup of cereal with food and BM mixed in.  Two times a day.  He has no teeth.  I have two questions...

1.  When does he need to go to three servings of solids per day?  Our schedule is working so well for us right now I don't want to mess with it.  And I love the freedom of not needing to bring solids when we are out durring the day, but I obviously want what is best for DS.

2.  How will I know when he is ready to start with finger foods.  He is great with his fingers and think he would LOVE it, but I don't know if he's ready or if he'll choke?????  What is a good finger food to start with?

I'd also like to add that I LOVE this site!  My husband laughs at me as this is my new obsession, but I think it is great and want to thank you all for all the help you've offered up to me so far.

I'm glad the site has been so helpful to you...it's been a lifesaver for me too!

He can go to 3 meals whenever you're ready. I think we had Tyler on 3 meals about 2 mo after we'd started solids, but some babies move faster than that. It's really up to you and your DS. I know that's not a very good answer, but there's really no guidelines that I know of for when he should be on 3 meals a day. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

It's hard to know when he's ready to try finger foods. He'll most certainly let you know when he prefers them, but that comes later. If he's doing well with more textured food, you can give it a try. We started with cheerios...your best bet is to start with somethat that will dissolve easily in his mouth. The first few times, I soaked the cheerio in water or milk first to soften it up and gave it to him from my fingers. As he got used to it, I gradually soaked it less and less until he was eating the real thing. Then we let him try self feeding and we moved on to other finger foods, like soft fruits chunks. HTH!

another good finger food is Veggie Puffs made by Gerber.  They are a little softer than cheerios and dissolve very quickly.  They come in sweet potato and corn, I suggest the sweet potato as corn is an allergen before 1.  We love love love these.  And I think she addicted to them  :D

Totally agree with tylersmommy i beleive your baby will tell you when they are ready for another meal. We started solids at 4months and a 3rd meal at 6months when DD was wanting her night bottle earlier than usual so we introduced dinner and it solved the problem.
We are just starting with finger food at the moment as we have just started with a sandwich for luch and DD is starting to eat it herself (well she eats half herself the rest i have to help her with).
