Baby food strike?
« on: April 30, 2006, 00:48:04 am »
Recently my son spits out the jar food.  It's kinda funny b/c it just oozes out of his mouth...oh right....the point....sorry  ::) ::)

So, we've started giving him noodles, toast, green beans, lima beans, banana (which he can't figure out how to pick up and it's so funny) pears, Gerber meat sticks....any other suggestions?  He's not a year old yet and our pediatrician doesn't want him to have any dairy or eggs until a year.  Sooooooooo, what next?  He's a big eater.  When he was taking his jar food, he'd take 2-3 stage 2 jars or one stage 3 jar with a stage 2 jar.
God will give you exactly what you ask Him for, even if it's not in the package you expected it to be in.

Tyler literally ate NOTHING off a spoon from 9-12 mo. And I mean nothing. So we got pretty creative...I'd often steam up a batch of veggies and freeze them on a tray, then stick them in a ziploc baggie in the freezer so I'd have them ready whenever. Some ideas:
- small broccoli or sweet potato chunks
- carrot pieces
Any kind of soft, ripe fruit cut into chunks is great. You can coat the slippery ones in dry baby cereal or crushed cheerios to make it easier for your LO to pick up. Some ideas:
- peeled peaches
- avocado
- watermelon
- mango
We also did sandwiches squished down and torn into little chunks. We'd use fruit or veggie puree as a sandwich spread or ripe avocado. And although I personally don't eat it, Tyler LOVED tofu chunks. Soft beans are good, and so is soft pasta (we'd often use veggie puree as a "sauce"). If you can get the okay for egg yolks (it's usually egg whites that should wait until after 1 yr), then french toast with egg yolks torn into bits is good too.

At this point, we're close enough to a year that I'm not too concerned about the eggs.  I gave him one yesterday and he LOVED it.  so, we'll be having eggs every other day I am sure!  I hadn't thought of the french toast.  I have some sugar-free syrup that I might try on them to see how he likes that as well.

Thanks for the tips on the slippery foods.  He loves bananas in the jar, so I konw he'll love them whole, but they're so slimy that he can't figure out how to pick them up!  We've tried a couple of times, so I'm going to keep giving it a try.  If it is something that I have to hand to him, so be it.

Thanks for your help!

You don't even have to use syrup on the french toast...I just mix a bit of cinnamon into the egg yolk and that sweetens it up plenty!

Well, today at the sitter he didn't want his real people food either!!!  I guess I'll send a jar as back-up.  When we got home, though, I gave him a jar.  He took the first two bites and then started spitting it back out.  I guess he'll eat when he's hungry, right?

Well, I figured out why he wouldn't eat at the sitter's.  He doesn't like his food cold (room temp is ok, but not cold) and she just took it right out of the fridge and gave it to him.  We're going to try to see if maybe he'll do it today at room temp.  when we got home he was starving and I tried jar food....which he promptly spit out.  So, we're back to noodles, meat sticks and fruit!
