Help- baby hates solids foods!!
« on: April 30, 2006, 09:16:06 am »
My LO is 23 weeks and I started solids with her this week. I have been using jars of baby food as bewing back in work and college I just dont have time to make my own at the moment. I started with babay rice mixed witha tiny bit of pureed fruit, she hated it- shuddered as if I ws feeding her lemons!! coughed spluttered and spat it all over me. This pattern has repeted each time I have tried, she just seems to find it completyely disgusting having ti in her mouth- it not the taste as I tried just baby rice which is very bland and she still wretched and spat it back over her bib.

This morning I tried a little bit o babay porridge and she didnt shudder but she refused to swallow it, she just held it under her tongue until it was so watery it all dribbled back out all over her.

My friends little one is exactly same age and loves her food- she squeals with excitement at the sight of her baby food and will eat anything.

Is it normal for my LO to be sooooooo against solids at the moment- I know its the first week but Im worried that if I keep trying every day she'll start to dread it.

Any tips for finding helping her enjoy it???

Given she isn't yet 6mo I'd stop until at least 26 weeks & then try again, when you do just offer babyrice mixed with either formula or breastmilk, what ever her milk source is & then after a week or so offer another thing like pears or a veg (one type only) mixed with the baby rice

There is very little nutritional value from solids until 7-8months, so the early weeks are just learning & it sounds like she just doesn't feel she is ready yet. All babies are different & your lo not being keen like your friend's doesn't mean anything, my girlfriend had a 13kg (28lb) 6mo who refused solids until 8mo, then he has eaten very well ever since (he's almost 8yo now)

This happened to us when dd was 5 1/2 months.  That's when we started to experiment.  It took her about 3 weeks to get it.

holding it in her mouth is okay.  She's just exploring taste and texture.  Our ped told us to get her used to multiple textures any way we could.  Examples, different rough toys, warm and cold washrags, hard and soft fabrics, etc.  The main transition to solids is getting used to texture.

your lo may also have a gag reflex still.  Mine still is pretty senstive and she's almost 8 months.

I would suggested starting with a mesh feeder.  For my dd, we put a banana in there and let her play.  She never like the spoon at first.  Have fun and always try food when you have the time and patience to deal with the mess.  The more your smile the better.

She'll get it and it will just happen and you'll be so excited.   :D
