This happened to us when dd was 5 1/2 months. That's when we started to experiment. It took her about 3 weeks to get it.
holding it in her mouth is okay. She's just exploring taste and texture. Our ped told us to get her used to multiple textures any way we could. Examples, different rough toys, warm and cold washrags, hard and soft fabrics, etc. The main transition to solids is getting used to texture.
your lo may also have a gag reflex still. Mine still is pretty senstive and she's almost 8 months.
I would suggested starting with a mesh feeder. For my dd, we put a banana in there and let her play. She never like the spoon at first. Have fun and always try food when you have the time and patience to deal with the mess. The more your smile the better.
She'll get it and it will just happen and you'll be so excited.
