bath for 3 weeks old?
« on: May 08, 2006, 15:23:16 pm »
I have not given my LO real bath yet, but sponge bath until now, because in hospital they told me until his umbilical cord is fallen I should not do that? It fell couple days ago. an I give him bath now? Or should I wait until his bellybutton is completely healed?

Hi Peike,
Both my babies were given their first bath while still in hospital and my lo has had a bath every day since. I'm not an expert by any means but unless your lo's belly button is infected or sore, he should probably be ok. Maybe wait until one of the mods answers as I would hate to give you false info.

Both my babies bellybuttons were absolutely fine, no infections or anything.

Hope this helps

Lee Ann,

I had a bath with my dd every few days after she came home from the hospital. Even with the belly button (just kept the area dry). Her bb is lovely! It's lovely to relax and have a bath with the babe. I even used to nurse her in the tub!
She now loves bath time :)

I don't want to go against everyone elses advise, I also had this question and her Ped said to wait until it was completely healed so as not to cause infection.  If you keep it dry it would be fine but its hard to keep dry if giving a "real" bath.

I would say go for a bath! You can also clean the belly button area with surgical spirits (from any pharmacy) to prevent infection.
